front left lower ball joint help....

Looking at the Chiltons manual it looks fairly easy to replace. I own a 1991 olds delta 88 btw.
There are two confusing points however. The manual makes reference to drilling out rivets when removing the ball joint, but nothing about replacing them when I install the new ball joint. Do I just replace those rivets with bolts? Also, how important is it to have that special ball joint tool to remove the old ball joint?
Oh, and the guys at tires plus made it sound like if I dont have my tires adjusted immediately after I install a new ball joint, my car wouldnt survive the drive to their shop. Is this true, or would I be able to drive the 10 miles to get my tires aligned without any trouble? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: front left lower ball joint help....

The new ball joint should be supplied with the correct nuts and bolts. Be sure to torque to spec.

Because you will be replacing the ball joint a pickle fork may be used. A fork will usually destroy the joints boot during removal so use only when replacing. Or you can strike the steering knuckle boss with a hammer. I use a 3lb. driller’s hammer. If you are squeamish or your aim is not real good I suggest you get a cheap pickle fork.

If you are lucky, sometimes prying down on the control arm is all that is required. I always try it first and have had a few pop right out. Make sure the sway bar link is loosened or disconnected as it will prevent the control arm from moving down.

Replacing the ball joint does not require you to loosen or remove the strut to knuckle bolts or the tie rod so you should be fine provided you have inspected the front end thoroughly and are sure that everything else is O.K.
