rear end swaying
i have a 91 pathfinder se and when im driving usually at higher speeds i can notice the rear end sort of sway when i let of the gas, and when i accelerate it seems to go the other way. i dont think its the alingment because it doesnt just pull to the left. it almost feels like the rear end is steering to one side or the other. thanks for the help.

I'm not so sure exactly what it is...but here's a few ideas of my own. Being a 1991, perhaps there's something going wrong with the differential in the rear end. Assuming you have rear leaf springs, not coil springs, it is possible that one of the rear spring brackets, bolts, nuts, or shackles could be loose, giving you that swaying feeling when you accellerate. I'm not expert on repairing cars, but I do work in the parts dept. of a Ford dealership. Some of the older Rangers, Explorers, F-Series, and E-Series vehicles have this issue.

Re: rear end swaying
In the 96+ Pathfinders this swaying problem was caused by bushings in the rear suspension. No idea if this applies to your 91 or not.

Re: Re: rear end swaying
So what's the solution to that? New shocks? My 96 Pathfinder is bad about that over bumpy interstate roads!

Re: rear end swaying
the bushings on the trailing arms were shot. just replace them and it works wonders.

Re: Re: rear end swaying
I have a 1997 SE and I am having this same problem. Nissan wants to replace all the upper & lower rear suspension links ($135 each x4) and one stabilizer link in the front.
Should I try the bushing first and see if that fixes the problem? They are 1.06 each from Nissanpartstore.com Please help... |

Re: rear end swaying
Sounds like your Lower trailer Arm bushings are worn. Due to rusted and frozen bolts, this can cost a lot in labor to torch them out. This should be done by a certified dealer or mechanic. Costs will run about a grand to fix. I have the same problem with my 96 pathfinder. The dealer said it was a common problem. I would try to fix it myself but have a difficult time finding the bushings from parts places. The dealer said I would have to replac the entire lower rear trailer arms/w bushings.
