Hi again,
This is a little more urgent than my first thread. If you want to play catch up, read about Grandsons aurora problems, now they are Grandma and Grandpas. His parents were just not going to do anything with this car and told him it had to go to the junk yard or we could buy if for same price as junk yard. $ 350, which we did today, we are 70 miles from them and probably drove it 35 - 40 miles like a top(I was following), Grandpa stopped to get gas, then air the tires, then the when the car shifted from low to second as he pulled out it died, he had to shut it clear off, restart it and go a little farther, did this a bit, pulled over. We checked the transmission fluid and got nothing. We put in 2 quarts(a bit over now.) It will work fine in reverse, but don't think we can make the rest of the way like that!! It was now dark, so we left it to pick up tomorrow, Will it be any better cold/ anyone ever hear of this. I have been reading the posts like mad, thoroughly confused but interesting, I am thinking solenoids, torque converter lockup, speed sensor??? Gee do I need help, preferably before we have to tow it..... Thanks much. |

Sorry to hear the troubles your havin here. Did you per chance check the tranny oil level before you started on your way back home. Was it full or did it loose it while driving? My 5cents worth would be call for a Flat Bed Tow Truck ( Call AAA if you are members ) and have it flat bedded to a Transmission shop in your city and have them pull the pan and screen(filter) off. They should be able to tell you if you are going to be into the big bucks or not for repairing the tranny. The last thing you want is to do damage while driving it home. Keepin my fingeres crossed fo you!

The Aurora will be safe to tow with the front wheels lifted, you won't require a flatbed just to transport it. Have the car scanned and post the codes here for some ideas from the peeps. I personally have had very bad experiences with transmi$$ion shops in this area, your luck may be better. I'm thinking the erratic operation might point to the transmission solenoids, or there are multiple problems. What's that old saying, 'we are too soon old and too late smart', I'm sure your Grandson appreciates all your efforts. :-)

Re: Grandma needs more help with Grandsons car URGENTLY
If it were me, I'd rent a dolly and pick it up if you another vehical to tow it with. Then pull off the oil pan and check the obvious things. If still no answer then maybe a transmission shop.

Re: Grandma needs more help with Grandsons car URGENTLY
sounds very similar to my 95 problem, i posted here a few weeks ago and got a termendous amount of help. everyone was pointing to the solenoids as there is a revised update kit. i pulled the codes and got a 94 gear ratio A. low and behold everyone was right, i replaced the solenoids with the updated kit, filtersbrackets and fluid and had it done a a great tranny shop in town for only 280.00, and thats including tax. they way you describe it it sound like its a solenoid issue. You MUST get the codes and no for yourself what they mean before you take it to a tranny shop or cosider yourself "raped". Get the codes and post them with as much description as possible and id be willin to bet someone will read and no whats going on and point you in the right direction. Just about everyone ive met out here is awsome people. GOOD LUCK!!!! Let us know what happens

Re: Grandma needs more help with Grandsons car URGENTLY
When you run a transmission that low on fluid the clutch bands usally are trashed! My friend did that in his. He had a bad cooling line and I told him to check the fluid every other day and he didn't check it for like two weeks and wondered what that smell was? I told him clutch's since it was about 2.5 quarts low! Then it just got worse from there because once the damage is done there's no going back.

ALSO AGREED WE COULD DISCONNECT THE TORQUE CONVERTER SOLENOID TO GET IT HOME IF IT WAS LOCKED UP, PROBLEM WAS AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS OF CRAWLING AROUND AND DISCONNECTING THINGS THAT DIDN'T WORK, INCLUDING HAVING ANY REAL SUCCESS GETTING CLEAR UNDER THE CAR, AS WE HAD A LITTLE DITCH, BUT THAT WAS ALL, SO GAVE UP AND CALLED A TOW WHO TOOK IT TO OUR MECHANICS HOUSE. THEY HAD TO DRIVE A TOTAL OF 125 MILES FOR $75 SO THAT WASN'T TOO BAD. AND SAFER THAN THE ALTERNATIVES. AND AS SOMEONE MENTIONED TOO SOON OLD TOO LATE SMART, HAHA. BUT OUR GRANDSON IS VERY APPRECIATIVE OF OUR EFFORTS AND A GREAT HELP TO US. THE MECHANICS WIFE LIKED THE CAR SO WELL, SHE IS TRYING TO TALK RICK INTO BUYING IT AND FIXING IT FOR HER. SO WILL SEE. THANKS AGAIN FOR INFO. AMA

Ama, you got a real good deal on the tow at least. Around here the hook-up would have been $45-$55 and the mile charge an additional $2-2.50 per mile! Hope you mechanic can find the trouble, please keep us posted so we can learn from your experience, okay? Best of luck.
