Torque braking

Hey guys. Just wanted to know how many of you guys torque brake in an automatic? How often? Any bad experiences with it? How bad does it damage your torque converter, etc.?
Note: it's when you hold on the gas and brake at the same time and let go of the brake when the gas starts to give way to making the car go. It speeds up reaction time off the line.
Of course, anybody (even 5spd guys) can respond. I just wanna know if somebody broke their car doing it. I do it every once in a while (usually only when I'm racing from a light).

I don't think it is too bad for your car, it is the only way to launch an automatic...I've never heard it refered to as torque braking...but whatever, it wont damage anything other than wear down your pads maybe...

As far as improving your reaction time...your a bit mistaken, the purpose is to get your engine closer to its ideal powerband. The engine is producing more hp and torque at a few thousand rpms than it is at 0rpms...so this just means it gets of the line faster...but your reaction times will be identical...as reactions times are just what the name suggests...it is the time the driver takes to react.

torque braking, aka brake torquing, comes from the RWD car crowd and has been poorly translated to the rice/import crowd. Just like how not one ricer can correctly tell me how to double clutch.

Anyways, brake torquing is when you hold your brake and floor it. This causes the rear wheels to brake loose bu the car will not move.


What your discribing is how just about everyone with an automatic launches their car.

Double clutch: When in gear, push in clutch, put gear into neutral, release clutch, press clutch again, put into next gear, release clutch.

you forgot the part where you blip the gas to match rpms...however he knows how to doubleclutch...he was simply saying that too many people toss around the lingo without knowing what it is or how to do it...

One of the best conversations I had about "double clutching":

Ricer:Good thing I double clutched or I wouldnt have beat him
Me: Um, if you double clutched you have lost big time, what exactly do you thing double clutching is
Ricer: When shifting you push in the clutch, rev match the next gear while shifting to it, then dump the clutch as you floor it.
Me: So what part of that did you do anything double?? Because thats not what double clutching is

At that point we started arguing and I walked away annoyed.
