removing tailgate protector thingy

i dont know what the hell its called but that black plastic tailgate protector thingy that sticks out that some silverados have(mine for instance). i figure it will look kinda corny with the gaylords lid im gettin here pretty soon. Has anybody takin this thing off and is there anyway to cover up the holes underneath without doin any actual body work? my dads 04 2500hd has a black plastic thing on it but it is just like a cover that fits over the edge, can u buy those anywhere? i hope somebody knows what i am talkin about

once you take the bolts out from the outside of the tailgate, it is held on the inside with what looks like adhesive tape.....I would just buy one of the GMC "slim" protectors that should fit under the tonneau cover and will cover the holes.

Wade makes a slim cover that goes over the tailgate. If you ever put a camper shell, or cover on the bed, you need to take off the stock plastic protector anyway. Almost any campershell dealer sells the part you are talking about.
