tried to start, car did not start, burning smell

I have a 92 chevy S10 blazer . I went to start the car and it turned over for a second and then it stopped. Right when it stopped I smelled something burning. It smelled like something electrical was burning. Now my truck will not turn over at all. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

sounds like you let the smoke out of the wires.
Look for melted wires by the battery, starter, ign switch, fuse block,

Was the smell coming from under the hood or inside the cab? Did you see any smoke?

When you turn the key, what does it do now, click? or nothing at all?

If the truck was starting/running previously, my first guess would be the Starter/Solenoid. Check your fuses too.

The smell seamed to be coming from inside the cab. I did not notice any smoke. When I try to start the car nothing happens..no noise at all. I replaced the starter less than a year ago so I do not think that that is the problem...I guess it could have crapped out though.

If you're sure the battery, starter/solenoid, and fuses are good, I think the ignition switch would be the next item I'd suspect. As a double check, you could try jumping the starter to see if it will at least turn over. If you turn the key to the "ON" position and jump the starter, it might even start. If it starts or at least turns over, it is a pretty safe bet that your ignition switch is bad.

How would i go about jumping the starter? I have heard about wacking the starter a couple times to try and get it going, is jumping the starter the same thing? If so, can anyone tell me where the starter would be located, and what it looks likes.

Re: tried to start, car did not start, burning smell

If you follow the positive battery cable (the big wire, not the little pig tails) down to the under side of the engine, the other end is connected to the starter solenoid. On the solenoid, there will be a second but smaller wire attached to a different terminal. "Jumping the starter" is a term used when something is used to "JUMPER" these two terminals together and thus bypassing the ignition switch. The actual amount of time that the two terminals are "JUMPED" is just a second or two. There is a commercially available tool available at any Autozone or Checker Auto part stores called a REMOTE STARTER SWITCH, but most mechanics use an insulated screwdriver to jump the two terminals. A WORD OF CAUTION HERE. IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERIENCED MECHANIC YOU CAN CAUSE A LOT OF DAMAGE INCLUDING A FIRE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. Get a friend or some help before trying this. It is simple to do but can be dangerous. BEEEEEE CAREFUL!
