So, this came up recently in my 2001 LS, but it isn't time for an oil change yet. It said it was down to 4% life, but I still have over 1000 miles until I'm due for a change. The owners manual says it has a cycle of 5000 miles. Isn't the usual mileage for a change 3000? Now, I only mention this because I'm going off the sticker in my window from the last time I had the oil changed that says I have over 1000 miles to go. If the mechanic gave this mileage as 3000 miles from when it was changed, then how could the computer possibly be saying it's due so early when it is supposed to last 5000? (I know, I should pay more attention to my mileage and oil changes and stuff). I do know that when I had it changed previously, that the oil life was reset back to 100% because I checked it when I got the car back. So, has anyone had any experience with the counter/computer messing up like this, or is it something I should worry about? I checked the oil level and it is fine, so I'm not too worried yet. Thanks for any thoughts.

yep - it cycles at 5000miles - and that is the interval that Ford threw into the 'free maintenance for 4years' package sometime ago.
unless you have a sticker somewhere showing the mileage of the last oil change - just go ahead and get it change now - cheap insurance. to reset the meter - push the status button until it displays the 'oil life' message and hold the reset in - it will set it back to 100%.
