Question AX 1.4 Diesel Stalling when hot

I have a problem with my Citroen AX 1.4 diesel. If driven at low loads around town, the engine runs fine.
It is when i have been on a long journey or on the motorway etc when the engine is very hot. After coming off the motorway, if i slow down and press the clutch down to change gear, the engine will stall. I have to stick it a gear lower and bring the clutch back up to start the engine again. From then on it will stall at every roundabout, unless, as i have learnt to do, i push the clutch at the last minute before i stop or change gear very quickly!
I have a feeling it is to do with the fuel injection system but i am not familiar with it. I am thinking it is maybe to do with a control valve sticking? Dont know if there is an ECU on this car! Any ideas would be welcome
