Tune-up and Original Plugs?

I just took my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L into the shop for a check-up on a Check Engine light. They came back and told me that it needed a full tune-up and that it was showing some misfires. I have two questions before I get this done:

1) What is required for a full tune-up?

2) I replaced my spark plugs around two years ago and so they should bein fine condition. When I told the shop this though, they told me that I should replace them because I didn't use Champion plugs like the truck came with and that they should be changed. Is there any reason why a different brand of plug should cause any problems?

Thanks for your time.

Re: Tune-up and Original Plugs?

there are different types of sparkplugs, cold plugs and hot plugs. u have to choose the right plug for the correct heat range of ur vehicle, or ur plugs will melt or build up carbon. should be hot enough to burn off carbon but not to melt the electrodes.

Re: Tune-up and Original Plugs?

tune up requires:
cap, rotor, ignition wires, plugs, fluid flushes, pcv valve, air cleaner element, check ur belts/hoses that should be it.

Re: Tune-up and Original Plugs?

I bought these at an auto parts store and I told them which vehicle I was using them in. They sold me these knowing what I was doing. I could only assume that they knew what they were talking about.

if your unsure about buying parts for your vehicle, just go to the dealership and they know what you need. its recommended.

Re: Tune-up and Original Plugs?

If you know what you are doing it isn't a problem. It depends on where you get it done, I know some places will charge up to $500. Get accell performance plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor(not a cheap company), PCV valve, new serp belt, new hoses if needed, air filter, fuel filter (optional), and fuel system cleaner. I do it at least once a year it usually takes me about an hour or two.
