98 montero sport radio install

Okay I am wanting to install an aftermarket radio into the montero however have heard some many different stories about not being able to install a radio without having to bypass the factory system? Not sure what all this includes? I went to my local Circuit City today to inquire about it and they told me that all i needed was two wire harnesses they sold which were 16.99 a piece and nothing else would be needed to install a radio into the montero sport? Is this correct? I would like any additional info on this. thanks
