Hey, I have a trashed 88 formula with a 2.8, and a nice 86 2m4 that has a blown engine. I want to swap the v6 from the 88 into the 86. Does anyone know if the wiring harnesses are the same? Can I just drop in the v6 and then swap computers and be done or is it more complicated that that? Also are the engine mounts all the same or will I need to use the tranny from the 86? They are both automatics. I would really appreciate any help you can give.

Re: 2.8 swap into a 2m4?
It is more complicated than that. Engine mounts, fuel pump, ECM, some wiring, gauge modifications. Automatic transmissions are the same.

Thanks, I take it that there must be just enough different things to make it a major pain. But this is my quandry, Is it more of a pain to swap the 2.8 out of the 88 into the 86 or would it be easier to remove all the body panels off the 86 and put them on the 88. I have removed some of the exterior panels off the trashed 88, and so far it seems like a pain it the butt, but which would be less of a pain? If somone can answer that for me, then I will be the happiest white man in wisconsin.

Re: 2.8 swap into a 2m4?
An 88 Fiero has the "better" suspension and handles better than the earier years. Although a PITA I would think that putting the 86 panels on the 88 would be "easier". When you get into mechanical swaps with engines etc there is always the problems of it working afterward. You have a running chassie to start with.
The big caveat is: any rust damage on the 88 chassie? Rust damage is a real PITA to repair. I can only imagine the potential of a rusted out frame on an 16 year old car from Wisconsin. |

Re: 2.8 swap into a 2m4?
Switch body panels, the 88 suspension is the best and is worth keeping
![]() Another Fiero guy in Wisconsin, guess I'm not the only one anymore - when you're finished with one of those cars I'll be happy to buy some parts off you.

Wanted to buy: 86-88 Fiero GT, 5 speed, fixer-upper. Blown motor, no motor? No problem! Rusty unibodies need not apply. 74-79 Ramcharger or 100, slant or no motor - not interested in v8 - Overdrive 4 is a big plus, NO hopeless rust buckets!!! 3Rd gen F body floor pans/camaro door skin (L) Why is it I see so many "Proud to be an American" bumper stickers on the backs of cars made in Japan or Korea??????
