89 probe engine swap ideas
I have an '89 probe gl engine (2.2L, no turbo) and a 4 speed atx(rebuilt recently) with a good 160,000 miles on it.
Id like to get a mildly used '89 or another 1st generation gt engine with the turbo.... Anyone know how easy/hard that swap would be, what I would need to do it? Also, how easy/hard would it be to find a gt engine? I live in Springfield, IL. Any help or input would be nice, thanks.

Re: Re: 89 probe engine swap ideas
its possible but you will need the ecu also, but its hard to find a f2t motor with low milage your better off getting a fe2 motor form japan, it basically a twin cam ver. to our motor, the f2t can take alot of abuse, i got 160k on mine boosting 12psi well 17 currently and it pull like a bitch..

the fe2 is not the engine to go with it is the exact same engine as whats in your 89gl right now.
and now i have more bad news for ya. to convert a gl to a gt is going to cost more than just buying another GT and modifying that. another bonus of starting with a gt is a better suspension and rear disc brakes. If you are interested in getting a gt and modifying that, there is a lot of aftermarket parts out there not so much in the looks department but as far as performance mods i have found many performance parts slotted and crossdrilled rotors, big brake kits, exhaust systems. coil-overs, i even found the A piller gauge pod. these are just some of the many aftermarket parts i have found out there. i have been researching first gens for almost 4 years when i got my first GL the first thing i looked into was putting a turbo in it. thats how i know its not worth it. the gt leaves you with many more options. and you can still get em real cheap which is another plus. if you are still interested in slapping some horsepower on a first gen probe just reply i will be glad to help you out with this. |

Re: 89 probe engine swap ideas
I get what you say about the gt being a better building block to work with...
But after thinking about it, if a swap to a gt engine isnt worth the money and labor, then I'm not sure about it.... The car has high milage, and is fine for a 1st car.... Hopefully I will get a new car in a couple years....thanks for your guys' input
