Boil in the bag Ricer (a race story)

This happened to me last night, and seems to be an increasingly common occurance since getting a new (to me) car and makes me wonder exactly what goes through these peoples minds.

After comming out of the local(ish) auto parts shop me and one of my friends got into our cars to start the hour drive home, he drives an Audi A4 2.6 V6 with mods, and I have a Celica GT4 with mods, its getting dark and rush hour has just taken hold, so noone is going anywhere quickly. We join the daily grind of traffic jams, he`s in front of me at this point and behind me sits this pair of headlights, the type of car is indistinguishable at this point so I pay the car very little attention, Inch by inch we work our way out of the town and eventually things start to speed up a bit, by this point its night time, were getting close to the motorway (freeway), the excitement starts to build for the upcoming race home with my bud, heart starts to beat a little faster, your grip tightens on the steering wheel, you knock it down a couple of gears, waiting for that gap in the traffic so you can leave the on ramp and join the motorway when suddenly there it is, your chance to go and BAMB off you go, burry the throttle into the carpet, the turbo whine builds, the engine starts to sing and its here, the moment youve been waiting for......the race is on. A quick glance in the mirror and that oh so familier set of lights that has been right behind you for the past half hour are now a distant spec in the distance. the race continues, by this time I`ve overtaken the Audi but his extra two cylinders and extra torque are starting to show and he`s gaining, Noooooooooo, force the throttle into the carpet even harder, squeeze evry last HP out of that turbo. the fuel guage now moves even quicker than the boost guage, I`m passing cars like they are stood still, everthing apart from the raod ahead is a blurr, concentration is full on, nothing else matters apart from victory, and as soon has it has started it is over, the race has run its course, I back off the accelerator and coast down to 70mph, my bud pulls up along side, gives me the thumbs up. Good race. But hang on a minute.....whats this, those lights that where behind me in the traffic jam are fast approaching, maybe the race isnt over yet, but what could they belong to? a BMW??? maybe a Nissan 240sx??? a Pulsar GTiR????. Nope...its a Vauxhall Corsa GSi with half a body kit and the back bumper hangin off and go faster stickers, all 106 BHP straining away to catch up (now, for those of you who dont know, a Vauxhall Corsa is a small bubbly hatchback, the kinda thing you buy for your wife to do the daily shopping in, they are popular in the UK for young car enthusiasts to modify, they are cheap to run, insure and have litterally millions of after market toys available for them, anyway back to the story) these lights are now back right behind me but as we are now only doing 70mph its not too much of a worry, but now he`s after blood, our blood, he wants to show us exactly what his steed can do, the raw power of his four thimble like pistons throbbing away, the drone of his sports back box, big enough to fit his whole car in echoing through the night, loud enough to scare small children and wake the dead. and here we go, race number 2....BOOM were off 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120mph the lights once again a spec in the distance, but not as far back as I would have thought. So i back off, thats enough for now, point proven. But no.....once again the lights grow bigger in my mirror, surely he cant want beating again, noone is that dumb, So I wait for him to draw level, give him the thumbs up, you know, a kind of "Well done" for actually getting his little car to say within sight, But the red mist has set in and he wants revenge and off he goes. now, at 120mph every nut and bolt on that car would be trying to shake itself to distruction, body panels would flap in the wind and the entire engine must have been glowing red from the effort. So I let him past, thats enough for me, my exit ramp is fast coming up and there has been an accident on the other side so lots of police about. but my bud see`s things different, as soon as the little car gets past him, he`s on it, right behind it, "See how you like these lights little car" my bud puls to the right to overtake but "No" the little car jumps lanes and blocks him, pulls to the left, and again the little corsa swerves to block, this guy cant be serious, with things starting to get dangerous my bud backs off and we both sit in the slow lane waiting for our turn off. Low and behold who should appear in front but the little corsa, now in the slow lane stopping us from undertaking him, a look of pride on his face, he`s in front, the victory is his.....idiot, not realising our turn is coming up and the race is long over, but not for him, a final attempt to stop us from exiting by driving in the hard shoulder (breakdown lane). A quick tap on the brake he goes ahead, we take the off ramp and are home free.
I can just imagine the stories he would tell his mates about how he beat a A4 and a GT4 coming home one evening cause he was "in front"...oh the shame, maybe i should go and trade my GT4 for a shopping car.....NOT. The question is after been beaten 2 times can he seriuosly think he has won? does his little mind really consider that a 1.6 106BHP shopping car can beat a 200BHP Audi V6 and a 260BHP GT4. who knows, but for minutes to come we`ll toast the road warrior in the little Corsa who made the drive home that day so much more entertaining............laugh?.,...I almost wet myself.

Sorry thats so long but hey, stories are there to be told.

*Edit* 2 days later - Was pulling out of the local DIY store carpark today and who should pull out in front of me, our friend in the little Corsa........He lives , One glance in the mirror and he shoots off but I didnt even bother burning him again, not with a car full of paint, wallpaper, paint brushes and girlfriend etc. I guess he truely didnt learn his lesson the first time. Next time I see him I`ll race him for cash, see how bold he is then!

Re: Boil in the bag Ricer (a race)

I think he "had his" that day, twice we beat him down but he never quit, at those speeds little cars like that dont have the stability or the brakes to stop quick if need be. Just thought it was funny he thought that he had burned us when in fact the race had already stopped, not to mention his excessivly dangerous driving. But fear not, his place on the wall of fame is secure.....the worst fastest slow car ever to attempt to race us....the legend lives on.

Nice story. I agree with rollaracer. Paragraphs would really be nice in this story. Keep that in mind for future reference. Anyway. Nice Kills. Late...

Maybe your right, I can never remember what the numbers are, although you `can` get pretty much whatever you want in the UK these days. whats the difference between a 200sx and a 240sx?

in the us theyre totally different cars.

otherwise. the 200 in japan (older is a 180)is the same as a 240 in the states, except for the engine 2.0 liter as opposed to 2.4 liter.

other than that, no difference

Re: Boil in the bag Ricer (a race)

Mods to the A4 are pretty simple, its a bit of a sleeper realy as it has no visible mods, they arnt slow cars by any means, those V6`s may not have alot of HP but they have loads of torque which gives em alot of potential at higher speeds 70mph+ but the best mod is something we got from the Audiworld web site, we ran a large diameter pipe up from the front of the car to under the airbox and sealed it in, this took a while to do but now at speed it acts like a mild turbo, the air being forced in by the speed of the car, if done correctly at 80mph a pressure sensor reads 7psi. which is roughly the same as a low pressure turbo, and gives a realy noticable difference. can be done to any car but be prepared to go through a few airboxes as i have heard of some exploding from the extra pressure, (this may or may not be true.) But give it a go. it a realy cheap way to give your car a bit of extra boost, if nothing else it feeds it with a nice supply of cold air.

I'm sorry but you have got to be kidding...what you just described might as well be the equivalent of a cold air intake...maybe basic ram air...either way, please don't tell me you just compared that to a turbo...that intake setup isn't pushing 7psi...it's nothing like a turbo...and at tops gives his 6cylinder another 5hp...once again...NOTHING like forced induction. And as far as plastic airboxes exploding...I'm not even going to bother...LMFAO
