muffler noise

1996 Accord LX. My check engine light recently came on. I had it checked out and it was determined that the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. This was about two weeks ago. I have not had it replaced as of yet. In the last week or so, there has been a noticeable decrease in power when I step on the gas. Also, the muffler has started to emit a noise that has gotten progressively worse. I have the oxygen sensor, and it will be replaced tomorrow. I am wondering if (1) the problems could be related and I should expect that a new oxygen sensor might resolve the exhaust system noise, or (2) whether I should expect that the two are independent and that I will need to have the exhaust looked at, too. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have to give people more than 60 seconds to reply...

I think your problems are most likely caused by the faulty O2 sensor. Easiest way to find out is to simply wait until tomorrow. If the car sounds fine and throttle response is fine after the sensor is replaced, you have no worries.
