Unhappy My car stalled while going 80mph on the freeway

I drive a 1997 Honda Accord LX. While driving on the freeway at about 80mph, I noticed that my accelerator felt heavy so I looked down at my gauges and noticed that everything dropped down to zero (my speedometer, rpm) and then jumped right back up to the speed I was traveling. I thought everything was fine and that it was just a minor blurp, but then my car would no longer accelerate and I was rapidly losing speed (plus I was in the fast lane freaking out). I managed to get across the freeway to the shoulder and noticed that all my lights were on (oil, check engine etc.) as if my car had just decided to shut off. When I started it back up, it was fine. Can someone please share some insight as to why my car is acting crazy?

have your batt checked out...if batt is ok...check the alternator.

thanks for your reply. turns out my car had a factory recall on it for the ignition switch. hopefully this will remedy the problem, but if it doesn't, I will definitely give your suggestions a try.
