92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

Alright, this is getting really anoying! Everytime it rains my passenger side carpet gets soaked, no windows left down, and the door trim is good. I've pulled off the cowl piece and removed the junk from around the fan motor and thought that was the problem, guess not. Now the carpet in the back is wet too. What's worse is it STINKS like a WET DOG! I'm planning on gutting the interior anyway and replacing the carpet but I need to fix the leak before I do. Has anyone else had this problem with the second gen cavy's??!

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

If, and when, you get it dry--try soaking the ouside of the car, with the windows closed, section by section, with a garden hose...go to every conceivable place, down the sides of the door windows, windshield, and dont rule out coming up from a rusted out section of the bottom of the vehicle!

Also..dont rule out coming from the heater--there is a hose that brings water from the engine to the underneath section of the dash somewhere in the middle near the center of the car. Check your coolant!

Hope you find!

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

Well I know it's not coming from the heater box because I put it (and the core) in myself and the carpet got wet without the core in and the elbow-hose is through the firewall. Coolant is fine. I know the drain plug(s) is(are) a little loose but if the carpet is dry before it rains and I don't drive it when it rains then it can't come up through the drain, but the carpet still gets wet. So, it must be coming from the cowl area but I was just hopeing someone else had the same problem and could tell me exactly where it's coming from. Good idea with the water hose! Thanks!
If anyone else has this problem let me know…

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

I know this happened on my wife’s ford focus and it turned out to be some kind of cabin filter that was jammed up with leafs and junk. Not sure if a cava has such a thing or if this will help.

The easiest way to find is to pull up your carpet and dry the floor.Get inside the car with a flashlight and have somebody outside spray it down with a garden hose.Look for water coming in.

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

The very first question i would ask is
1. does it get wet just sitting there when it rains (comming from top of car) or do you have to drive it in the rain to get the floor wet. (from under car)
2. The water that you see on the floor does it look clean or dirty.. clean means from top of car dirty means from under car.
3 look at the windshield seal they leak a lot////////////////////////////

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

The water is coming from your door panels trim seal next to your windows. It drains down in to the inside of the doors, then leaks out of a few holes in the bottem of the doors. If you replace the seals, you may fix the leak. I have a 91 cav that had the same problem. P.S. dont seal the holes at the bottem of the doors, if you do,when you get in & shut the door, you get a splash of water !

I have a 92' with the same problem. Do you mean the black plastic stripe around the door window?
Thank you for the advice, cause I was wondering where it leaks from for a few months.

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

ok i had a 94 and it was leaking like that. I took the cowel panel off and right below the windsheild where the water drains into there was hole rotted and the water was litteraly pouring inside my car...... filled it with caulk and ended that.

Thumbs up Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

I HAVE the answer to your problem. I have owned 4 cavaliers between the years of 91 and 94. The water comes in through some holes that are underneath the panel between your hood and your windshield (that your wipers attach to). If you open your hood and look underneath that panel there should be a 2 black rubber plugs (that plug the holes that are about 2in. around and oval shaped). There is one on the left side and one on the right side. They get filled with leaves and other debris. Clear out the holes and make suer that the plugs cover the holes, then dry your carpet and you will be good to go. I recommend pulling off the trim and lifting the carpet and padding up and leave it that way until it drys. Let me know if you get it

Re: 92 4-door carpet is SOAKED!!!

My 2 cents is to look inside the wheel wells and pull the carpet off the area around the shocks in the back, see if they're leaking. These cars tend to get rusty around that area.
