I just bought my first durango and I am pretty happy with it. I was wondering how the speakers sound since it was supposed to be fully loaded. Well I started driving around with the stereo all the way up and the bass and all that in the middle and I heard a wierd noise. The same thing happned to my friend who also has a 1999 dodge but he has a dakota r/t. I looked into it and as far as I know I so have the Infinity speakers because the small tweeters in the front doors and the head unit both say infinity so I thought they all would be. Well when I got to looking around I found out that the door speakers are card board and that could very well be what I heard. So I think that the speaker is blown. Could they be card board and if so then what in my car are infinity? Now I have heard that the speakers in durangos have built in aplifiers or something like that. If thats so how would I put speakers for the car and would I have to do a lot of changing. Also What size are all of the speakers in the 1999 Dodge Durango SLT. Any help would be great. Thank you

They are cardboard and they are probably blown. The are 6 3/4". Alot of replacement 6 1/2" will work if they have the open slot screw holes (listings will specify 6 1/2 and 6 3/4"). The fronts are only dual cone. I don't know if they are infinity or not. A very close replacement for these can be had for $10 from walmart. The rears are coax. I replaced all four of mine with panasonic three ways. The front are a little tinny because of the extra tweeter. The amp is in the system, not part of speaker.

I was just at an electronics store and the clerk made me want to leave. What ohms are the speakers in the 99 Durango with the Infinity system? He was telling me that they were most likely 2 ohm speakers since they were Infinity speakers. They had Infinity speakers that were 4 ohm dual channel (woofer and tweeter) in one for door replacements for $99 a set. The ones he wanted to sell me were 2 ohm speakers for $150 a set. What is the watts of the Infinity system too? I thought it was 60 watts but I am just guessing. No reason to buy 200 watts speakers for a 60 watts system.

I just replaced my rear speakers in my '99 SLT. It has the infinity system. The rear speakers are indeed 2 ohm impedance. Not sure about the fronts. The amp will perform best with the same load. Larger loads (4 ohm speakers) will not play as efficiently as 2 ohm speakers.
I bought a pair of Kappa 62.7 speakers (consider eBay), but I had to do some modification to make them fit (Kappas have 4 mounting holes, stock infinity have 3). I found out afterward that adapter rings are available for about $10. Somewhat off topic: the speakers are technically not "blown". Blown refers to melting through the wire in the voice coil. This results in no sound reproduction from the speakers. More than likely, your rubber surrounds on the speakers deteriorated from the harsh environment (sun light, temperature, and moisture). The end result is sound reproduction of mids and highs with distortion of the bass (which sounds like what you're experiencing). You can re-cone the speakers ( www.partsexpress.com probably has the parts), but who wants to deal with that... |

Speakers
Just found this thread... I also need to replace front door speakers in my 1999 Durango (the ones with two down low and separate tweeters higher up on the door)...
Silly question. How do I get into where the speakers are? I can't seem to remove the speaker cover. Do I have to remove the whole door panel? Thanks. |

Re: Speakers

Yes, you are correct. You will need to "pop" off the entire door panels. Use a stiff bladed putty knife or similar tool working around the perimeter between the plastic panel and the door frame. There are several plastic "pawls" that extend from the back of the panel and hook into holes in the sheetmetal panel underneath. When you hit one of these with your putty knife blade, gently pursuade it up and out of the hole in the sheetmetal panel. I've had mine off several times to replace power window regulators and as long as you take it easy you shouldn't have to much trouble. If you happen to break one of these pawls you can always use some JB Weld to repair it. Good luck. T-bank |

Re: Need help with stock speakers in durango
There is a guy on ebay that sells adapters for Durango. It is very reasonable (like $5 for 2 speakers) and allow you to mount 6 1/2" speakers or even 5 1/4". CHeck it out. It really broaden the choice of speakers. I used them for both the front and the rear and they work great and are very easy to install
