Idle Problem - 2001 Explorer

Make / Model: 2001 Explorer / 4.0L SOHC / 80K miles

Problem: Won't Idle / When starting, have to hold gas pedel down to get it to start and remain running. If pedel is released, engine stalls out.

Actions Taken:
1. Changed fuel filter (found out the hard way about the special tool required to remove filter from fuel lines ).
2. Changed plugs
3. Checked fuel pressure at test point on fuel rail....read 65 PSI when running.

Questions:
1. Any suggestions on my next step? Based on info I've read on this forum, plan on looking at the IAC valve....hope this solves the problem.
2. Does anyone know what the specifications are on the fuel pressure? I hear a reading of around 40 PSI is what to expect but not sure if this changed on the newer explorers.....I'm reading 65 PSI.
3. Does anyone know if Ford moved the pressure regulator location on the 2001? I thought the pressures regulator was on the fuel rail at the top of the engine but I can't find it. Wanted to check it out if required. Also, can't find a return fuel line to the gas tank. Does the newer models have a different fuel delivery design?

Folks, THANKS for any assistance on this, my son is counting on me to help him get this puppy running again....don't want to let him down

Re: Idle Problem - 2001 Explorer

Replace or clean the Idle Air Controll valve.
It is sort of cylendrical in shape, located under the central engine cover.(where the carburator
used to be.) About $70 at Nappa.

Only takes about 10 minutes to clean and oil. Works like a charm. I had the same problem and now it's fine.

Re: Idle Problem - 2001 Explorer

Thanks for the responses above!!
It was the IAC.....my son's explorer runs fine now :-).
Just for information to pass along, the IAC appears to be a spring loaded device controlled by an small 12 volt electric motor that opens / closes to allow air into the intake manifold. Mine was "stuck" in the closed position. A little cleaning and oil allowed it to move freely....did the trick.
Thanks again!!

I have the same problem with 98 XLT 4.0 SOHC. I have done a tune up, replaced IAC valve and still no change. I am thinking of a possible vacume leak at the manifold????
