Shift lock release

I Just got my new 97 GTP when we test drove it there was no problems but now every time i take off i have to stick a stick in the shift release hole and press the button any clue why i have to do that? Plus i wanted to change out the speakers in the back but couldent get the covers off its like riveted to the carpet if anyone knows whats up let me know./ no it stays in gear once you get it into gear but in order to get it out of park i have to push the shift lock release button.

You have to remove the rear seat and then pull out the rear deck to replace the speakers.

The speaker covers are attached to the carpeted rear deck. In order to remove the carpeted rear deck you have to remove the back seats.

If no one is able to give you exact directions, I'll post them from home tonight.

Two pull tabs under the bottom seat, one on each side.Pull them to pop the bottom seat out,now remove it from the car.You will have to remove 2(maybe 4) large nuts. Two will be holding the middle seat belts in place, the other two will be on either side of the middle two, make sure the middle seat belts come out since they hold the tounge on the stud and will not allow you to pull the seat out.Once those are out you will want to take the side seat belts and shove them behind the seat so they are out of the way,now take the seat back and lift up while you pull towards you.You are trying to release 4 hooks from the metal frame holding the seat in place. If you look in the trunk you should be able to see them. Once the back seat is out, you will be able to use a trim tool to remove 4 x-mas trees that hold the covers in place.Hope this help you out.

Re: Shift lock release

I really wish I had found this site earlier! My car '98 GP GT had the water leak too! Hubby could not find a drain hose. I feel so ripped off right now! If it was just a clogged hose, I think I'll kill myself. In April, I paid Community Motors, our local Pontiac dealer and where I bought the car from, $791.22 to fix the water leak.

Here is what my receipt says: Customer states that there is a water leak coming from the front passenger side. Water is puddling on passenger side floor. Tech water test the vehicle. Tech found that the water was leaking in from center of dash. Found cowl not sealing and air box leaking. Replaced the cowl cover and resealed the air box. All Okay. Labor $642.00, Parts $149.22, Total $791.22.
