why are there no good tow hooks up front

this past weekend while offroading at a friends land i got extreamly stuck. Sitting in mud and water to my knees i couldnt get out to attach the tow rope to the car a friend who pulled me out hooked it up and attached it to my already half broken peace of crap brush guard. long story short almost riped it off pulled the bult of and i am trying to figure out if theres a decent place to addatch a tow rop or chain to other than the far back small tow holes.

Re: why are there no good tow hooks up front

There is a factory tow hook a few inches back on the right frame rail up front on the SE and is part of the Sport package on the XE (also includes foglights if you're not sure you have it). If you don't have the hook, the Nissan one is about $40 from a dealer, nuts. You can buy a better 3-hole hook from a 4x4 shop or online place like 4wheelparts.com for much less and install it yourself, there are captured nuts inside the frame rail to attach it to, just need the correct bolts for 'em.

3 hole generic tow hook

part# 7605
tow hook kit (3 hole)
76-on cj & wrangler
black

For mounting in the factory front location, you will need to 2 bolts.
M12x1.25x50mm

Get stuck again and rip off that POS brushguard. You'll be better off.

Or you could go with these.....http://www.xterraparts.com/Merchant2...Category_Code=

The mount in the front two holes on the left and right frame rails (I think that's were they are). You will have to grind the holes to make it a little bit bigger though.

And I second ripping off the POS brushguard.

just my

This brings something to mind that probably should be discussed. First, no 4X4 short of maybe a Jeep Rubicon has tow points front and rear. Most of the new ones have front but no rear. So here is where common sense comes into play.

Imagine if you were buried in said mud and had to pull from the rear, what would you do? Some pull from the hitch, it can be done if done correctly. But you are asking a little 5/8" pin to pull a lot of weight (4,500 lbs times the pulling force required to extract the stuck vehicle).

My advice is for you to do the same as many are doing, give careful thought to rear extraction and plan accordingly. If you have 2 tow hooks front and rear, by cross-tying a tree strap to equally divide the pull between the frame rails the strap will be allowed to slide as necessary to equalize the pull on both frame rails, reducing the liklihood of frame tweaking.
