Muffler/Fuel Sending Unit

hey all. it has been a while since i have posted. i have two subjects i have questions on.

my muffler has failed. rear pipe that comes out of the back of it has fallen off and the innards have collapsed. using a hacksaw, is it easy to replace without any welding equipment?

secondly, my fuel gauge does not read right. i understand that a 91 metro has a 10.6 gallon fuel tank. a few days ago my gauge read near the Empty and i filled it up to the very most. It only took 6.7 gallons, pointing towards a faulty unit. does this sound like a reasonable diagnosis and is it easy to replace? thanks in advance!

Re: Muffler/Fuel Sending Unit

My fuel guage on my 93 is the same way. I think it is just one of those quirks about these cars. My 95 is even worse, I can fill it and it does not even go all the way full. It sits about the width of the needle low. I have owned 7 Metros (92 to 97) and they all seem to be about the same. The muffler is pretty straight foward.

so what should i do? replace it or just let it go? whenever it hits Empty i am tempted to just keep driving but i'm too nervous i'll run out, even though supposedly there is about 4 gallons left. not sure what to do about it.

There's actually 10 liters left in the tank when you hit the red line (about 4 gallons), so yes you can continue driving. Your engine will stop if you are really low (about 1 gallon) if you take a right curve while going a bit dow (like when you enter the highway).

For the muffler, change it for a 2'' pipe from cat to back =P
