Question 2001 chevy Z71 / Help with 4X4 engagement

I'm inquiring about the auto 4x4.. here's what was sent to me..

"The truck was in 4 hi and it was kind of jerky when pulling in and out of parking lots so then I pushed the button to shift it into 4 auto (while stopped) it looked like it was switching modes (the lights changed) and when I took off it felt like it wasn’t engaging properly so I hit the 4 hi button to go back into 4 wheel drive but it wouldn’t go back into 4 at all (no indicator lights would turn on). Now it won’t shift into any other mode when you push the buttons and there are no indicator lights on any of the drive mode buttons. The service 4wd light is on and it acts like the hubs are locked in but there is no power to the front wheels. When you try to move the truck the rears spin but the fronts are locked. There wasn’t any loud clunk or breaking noises so I don’t think it’s mechanical, more likely electrical.

I’ve heard that those switch panels go out or possibly a soleinoid or actuator that shifts the transfer case.

The switches go out sometimes, and so do the t-case engagement motors. But I can't remember exactly what they call 'em. I'd start with the switch, it's cheaper and they are more prone to failure.
