1996 chevy suburban 2-4WD Transmission problems??

I have a 96 2-4wd suburban that was running perfect and all of a sudden quite shifting gear while I was driving. The tach quit too both at the same time. If I stop and wait for awhile, It will take off like nothing is wrong and within a mile down the road It starts squeeling and seems like it dont want to go. The belts are all tight, I have no warning lights coming on. Any ideas? I have just parked it untill I can figure out what Im looking at in repairs.

It might be an ignition switch problem. With an ignition switch problem, you will lose speedo, tach, prndl display and possibly have a SES light up with up to 7 transmission DTC's, and usually third gear only unless you use the shifter to go to first or second

i am new to this... i was driving 70 on cruise and i had the same thing.. speeo out, tach out, ses on, and 5 codes for shifter selenoid and transfer case and 4X4 initialization faqilure,... p.s. NOT A 4X4!!!... i see you think it may be an ignition switch???

In addition to the switch, any part of the power distribution system could be at fault. The main power bussing in the underhood electrical center, and the fuse connections there are suspect. Some models also had a main power stud at this electrical center made where a larger battery power cable would attach. This was made of cast zinc in some years, and erosion would eventually make a poor connection, with power loss, and all sorts of related problems.

What year is the truck, anyway?

check and see if you have 12volts at the trans fuse

hey, thanks for the info, but jeremy-WI was right. i went to advance auto and the guy there let me install the new one there, (ignition switch). it was a box with a bunch of wires coming out that ran down my steering column. as soon as i hooked it up all was right again with my baby...the tach and speedo came back, the tranny worked just fine and after 25 min, the SES light went off. no more problems.... 138.00 fixed it when 3 tranny guys wanted to give me a new tranny. i told them all that fixed it and they all said "I CANT BELIEVE IT, I NEVER HEARD OF THAT!!!"... i am so happy i came across this automotive forum.... i am hooked... thanks for the good advice...
