1985 Hard Start Cherokee HELP!!

1985 Cherokee 1bbl carb 4cy
Note: with new rebuilt engine AND carburator the thing STILL runs bad like it's missing but all cyl are firing.

Hard starts have to crank a lot. Did plugs wires cap/rotor I reset timing checked vacum leaks (not sure ther are so many!)

smell lots of gas even after an engine rebuild have to stomp on gas to keep it running then it blows smoke lots of gas smell in exaust for first minutes running sometimes I even get a backfire or two because holding gas to floor is only way to start it!.

Won't hold idle by itself in initial warmup once engine is warmed up (5min or so) it will hold idle great! runs nice gets good power idle has to be manually kicked down but i think that might be a setscrew for kickdown idle.

the thing doesn't run and before I go back to another mechanic I wonder what everyone else says.

everything that is replied to this is greaty appreciated in helping solving this Jeep's nightmare for 4yrs!

what to check where do I turn in this truck DEMON! that posesses this jeep!

Thanks to any help you have Have a good day!

85 help

I got an 86 2.8 wich is the same motor as a camaro. under the carb sits a fuel warmer pad, it looks like a carb spacer or half a inch riser. it has a lead wire that comes out of it which has to be hot from the ignition. thats the main reason it runs good warm the other reason is the choke set is wrong, check and readjust. email me it you need more got to go.
