I currently have a 99' Civic Si and wanted to upgrade the b-16. While looking for internals for my block i came across a stock b-16 Type-R block with 0 miles. So now i have a Type-R block and i really want to put a mild turbo setup on it with anywhere for 7-9 psi. I just havent found anyone to ask if this is possible with the compression of the type R. I don't know if i sould go N/A or turbo. If anyway possible i would like to go with the turbo. Just want a everyday driver with turbo but dont want to sell or scrap my type-R block. Any hints or suggestions are much needed.

Re: Type-R Turbo
I'm sure it can handle 7 psi, but I wouldn't chance it. Replace the internals with forged parts.

is it a bare block or is it a block with internals if its a bare block it would be able to handle it you would just have to use lower compression pistons

Re: Type-R Turbo
it can handle 7psi on stock internals I have a buddy that has a SC on his Si and has been running 8psi for a year and a half now with no problems.

Re: Type-R Turbo
If you change out your CTR pistons, let me know, I'll take them off your hands.

the block already has type R pistons, rods, and crank. It is ready to be dropped into the car. I just really don't want to put new pistons in it if I can get away with it.

Re: Type-R Turbo
The CTR pistons yeild a high comp ratio. You don't want this if your going Turbo. If you decide to go all motor, than you should keep the pistons. If not, you might want to change them.
Some one please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want him to think I'm lieing to get his pistons. |

For example: the power would be about the same if you had the high comp. type-r pistons with 7psi or lower comp. pistons with 12psi. but if you want to run more boost either build up the internals or lower comp. |

Re: Type-R Turbo
Man did you buy the wrong block for boost! I'd say 6-7psi might be okay, but if you're going to fork over thousands of dollars for a turbo kit just to see like 50hp (with those pistons, unless you feel like breaking parts), that's just stupid. I'd say swap them out for some 9:1 or 9.5:1 pistons so boost can be your friend, and a V8's enemy

Re: Type-R Turbo
With all that said, would you like to get rid of your pistons?

Naw, I am going to hang on to the pistons. I a mjust going to go all motor and a shot of nitrous.

Re: Type-R Turbo
You may want some different pistons for that too.. and rods. The ctr's are cast iron, which is too soft for the big bang nitrous makes. Say goodbye to your rings too, as the n2o will slowly melt them away. With the setup you now have, it's expensive, but your only feasible option is to go all motor.
Start with an Si short ram intake, 4-1 header with a 2.5" collector, a high-flow catalytic converter, and a 2.5" (apexi world sport) exhaust. If the money's right, get some yummy Toda B cams to wake her up in vtec and you'll have a quick, reliable ride. If you don't want the old parts you can always sell them for a nice chunk of change on here or other forums (i.e. www.honda-tech.com ). |

Re: Type-R Turbo
i say sleeve it and get some forged parts and still go boost! (and consider selling your pistons to b18ls cuz i can tell he really wants them
)
