99 Grand Prix Hood Paint Cracking

My 99 Grand Prix Hood cracked real bad over a year ago for no apparent reason. 5 or 6 large cracks across the hood in different angles. Someone told me it looks like they used too much hardener in the paint. The dealer wants $500 to prep and repaint. Guess I will look for a good used black hood instead to save money.
Anyone else have this happen?

i have a 99 too and the hood is pretty beat up. I don't have the money for a new paint job so i just used some touch up paint. Cheasy i know but you can only tell up close. Have you tried any other paint shops? Their prices may be more competitive

Re: 99 Grand Prix Hood Paint Cracking

The hood might have been repainted before and had poor prep work or not preped at all. That would cause the paint to crack and even lift after a while.
If that's the case, you will have to strip it or at least sand it down to the original paint before repainting.

I bought the car new and the hood has never been painted since it left the factory. Not sure what they did wrong. I can pick up a 97 GTP hood that is black for less money than painting mine. This will fit, right? I don't suppose GM would repaint for free either?

GM had problems with black paint for some time The clear coat would seperate. I doubt that the dealer will do anything.

Find one your color with vents . The vents function and look cool. They came on my 2000GTP Daytona Pace Car

Re: 99 Grand Prix Hood Paint Cracking

OK, here is the story from hell. I stopped at the car wash down the street. Having a Black GTP at the time and living in Florida. The car is always dirty.
I pulled the car up, kid started to vac. So I went around front to get it when it came out. 5 mins. later here it came. The hood looked like someone put a spider web across the hood. Not a big one, like a 1,000 small ones. The WHOLE hood. They said that sometimes when a black car gets hot and the water hits it, this happens. Well to make a long story shorter. $2,000.00 and I had the car painted. Now I just got my GTX back from the paint shop. This makes the 17 times they have had it, to fix paint. And it's going back. I think I win!!!!
