Idle speed control valve?
***UPDATE details in reply below***
Would it effect the emissions greatly? When warmed up, my MK7 escort is only slightly over on the emissions test [not the Co2, the other side of it] But, when done from cold, its well over the limit allowed. The diagnostic check has pointed to this idle valve, but I dont see how this can effect emissoins so much??? Thanks Last edited by The Fisherman; 11-12-2004 at 06:00 AM. |

Re: Idle speed control valve?
it controls the amount of air that enters the engine at idle.. id imagine that it would effect it greatly if it put to little air in... mine came from the junkyard-5 bucks.. dont spend 50-80 bucks on a new one.. its not worth it.. and as far as getting it swiched by a mechanic-well its two bolts and a gasket.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. It has at least made me feel a little better as I was worried that the Idle speed control valve wouldnt be the root of this problem; and although its not guaranteed to fix it, it could well be causing the problem. In the UK, the cheapest I can get it from a breakers yard is £35+ VAT & delivery. With regards to fitting it, im a bit nervous about that...i have no experience at it. Plus the garage says it needs to go back on the diagnostic machine after fitting to set it properly?? Thanks again. The Fisherman |

Re: Idle speed control valve?
hmm.. that dont sound right.. i just unbolted mine (battery was unpluged to clear the codes) pulled it off, diconnected it, reused the old gasket and slaped it back on. No sweat.. never heard anythin bout setting it properly.. You can also take some carb cleaner and just spray the inside of the little motor down and see if that has any effect..

***UPDATE***
The emissions on the car are still sky high, apparently its the "Lamber" that is the problem? ??? the other side of the emissions test, the car seems fine. I had a full exhaust replacement last weekend [including the catalytic convertor] as it had a hole in that and the back box....thought that would help, but it hasnt :-[ What the hell could be wrong with it? The garage where ive taken it for its MOT are saying "Goto Ford to get them to look", but they arent the ones paying £50 per hour or whatever it is that they rip you off with. It still runs like crap and the diagnostics said it was the "idle speed control valve" but this isnt going to be enough on its own to effect the lamber readings is it? HHHHHHHHHHelp!!?!?!?!?!?! :'( |

Re: Idle speed control valve?
Does your car have an EGR valve? If it does take it off and clean it along with the passage leading into the manifold. Also, check your oxygen sensor it may be going bad but not giving you a code. Both of these will give you high hydrocarbon levels and excess CO which will cause the car to fail the test. I would also spend a couple of pounds and buy a new PCV valve and change it if you haven't already done so. Last, the IAC you put on was it new? If not then remove it again and clean it with spray carb cleaner. If it was new remove the throttle body and clean the body along with the passage leading from the IAC to the throttle body.
Hope this helps you find the problem! |

Im lost with the technical jargon, but ill print this off and take it with me to a local garage and let the lad work his magic and see if it works.
Thanks very much for your help. |
