crank bolt removal

Ok here's probably a stupid question. On a 7 bolt what direction is the bolt holding the timing sprocket to the crank threaded?

its regular threads... put an impact on it or have a friend sit in the car, put it in 5th gear, push on the brake while you put a big ass breaker bar on it and pop it loose!

i just did this no more than 4 hours ago. i tried the same way eclipseRST says to do it with no luck, but if it doesnt work for you do the bump start method. i had 2 people, me and my friend. we took a big breaker bar and propped it up on top of the axle and i turned the key for a split second so the starter rotated the engine, it came off instantly. now i just have to figure out how to get it torqued back down...

thats a good way to mess up your starter or flywheel... and if it happens to turn over just enough to start it, that wouldnt be good at all!

You pull the coil pcak when you do it. Very common method. You can torque it back down by holding one of the cams (choose the right one so the belt doesnt jump, the intake cam I guess).

well my car has no head on it so there is no way it can start, and plus you can take the MPI fuse out, i got the idea from VFAQ!!!

thanks for the idea Kevin, i was just outside trying to rig up a way to tighten it down, had the idea of using the old timing belt as a sort of strap wrench, but i guess i'll wait and tighten it when i bolt the head down, thanks for the idea and sorry for hijacking the thread

In case anyone else comes across this thread, what I do when building up a motor is tighten that bolt before putting the oil pan on. You can wedge a prybar in the crank throws so it cant turn, while you tighten that bolt. It needs 70-80 ft-lbs, which is quite a bit.
