Good Old Piston Slap???

I know its been posted to death but I just need some reassurance. I let my 2000 Silverado, 5.3, sit over the weekend and when I started it I got the ever popular clatter. Has always sounded like valves tapping to me but the dealer and everyone else says piston slap.

Anyway, it only has 56,000 miles on it and it just kills me when I hear this clatter. (done it since new) It always quiets down after 10 to 20 seconds but it seems like it clatters forever. I change the oil and filter every time it tells me to, the change oil light, which is about 3,800 miles. I put in a quart of Slick 50 at the last oil change.

So everyone else with this engine has the same clatter right?? Change the oil and filter regularly and the engine will last for 200,000 miles right?? Damn I wish it didn't clatter like it does,

MC

I had the clatter on my old 4.8L. I have always used a synthetic blend oil, and the 4.8L had 126,000 on it when I swapped. The 6.0L hasn't made any noise yet, other than the cam lope.

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

Slick fifty might be a bad idea. Good for the product sellers but bad for your motor...just go sythetic if your concerned...JJ

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

I've got an '01 hd with the 6.0L. Bought used 3 months ago with 38,000 miles. Previous owner was using Mobil 1 synthetic and I have the chatter. I can hear it for maybe a minute on cold starts, once the motor warms up a bit the clatter is gone.

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

Thanks for the replies. Good to know I'm not alone. I just shake my head every morning when I crank my truck and grip the wheel tightly till the rattle stops. I think shaking my head helps quiet the rattle sooner though. LOL

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

Thats right, I have a 2000 Z71, bought it brand new and it has clattered since. I hate it. I've tried different oil additives and such to no avail. The 5.3 engine has been babied from the get go with synthetic oil.

The clanking/tapping sound is carbon build-up on the pistons. By a can of SEAFOAM & run it through that BIOTCH!!!! That'll quite it down.

Don't thinks thats it Seafoam - it has tapped since it had 4 miles on it.

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

Yeah, I know. My '01 4.8 did it since it was new. My mechanic (Dad, 40 years experience) & I put some Seafoam in it & I have not heard any since. Put it in around 20,000 miles, now has almost 60,000.

Re: Good Old Piston Slap???

I must be lucky or something. Maybe I'm going deaf . I bought my truck a year ago and have 77k on it now and dont hear any clattering, rattling or other such noises. I am using synthetic but was using dyno and didnt hear anything then either.

I had it really bad.

My 2000 3500 with 5.7 100,000 miles sounded like it had no oil running anywhere for about 30 seconds. Major piston slapping.

Then I switch to 10w-30 Mobile one and used a Mobile One filter and after about two days the dry start and piston slap was gone.

Also I installed the HyperTech 87 fuel setup on my truck. I do not think this makes a difference but you never know.

Yes, I spend a lot of money on my truck.
Yes she is worth it.

Sounding like no oil is running anywhere for about 30 seconds on a cold start is exactly what I'm talking about.

10W-30 Mobil One eh? I'm going to try it on my next oil change. If I still hear the chatter I'll send you the receipt for reimbursement, LOL

But you must

You must use the Mobile One filter also.

It is not cotton based like all the others.

It is syn(whatever) also.

Keep the oil a lot cleaner.

Better oil pressure on low rpm when the engine is hot.
