hi....i dont know if you can help me diagnose a problem i have. i own a 99 dodge durango.. and recently when i go on trips...usually trips longer than 100 miles....the revolutions (rpms)on the engine start going up and down and you can also hear the car shift up and down... like if it was pulling something really hard or something was holding it back. i keep a steady speed and all i heard is the shifting going up and down....any of you know what it is? I THINK IT MIGHT BE THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR...BUT IM NOT SURE. IF U GOT N E IDEAS OR ANY COMMENT.. THEN POST A REPLY N GIVE SOME IDEAS OF WAT TO DO WIT MY DURANGO

sounds like it is going in and out of converter lockup or overdrive, does this happen on flat highway? what speed? any code?

I'm no mechanic,
BUT I just read the owners manual on my 99....
it mentions turning off the OverDrive in some road conditions. There is a button on the end of the shifter knob. A green light should show up on the dashboard.

it happens on flat highway n hilly highway. mostly about 60-70 mph..wat u mean by code?

if you disengage the OD does it occur, and does this happen on flat highway? what speed? any code?

whether is engage or not ..... i still makes dat noise.......

I am having the same problem with my 2000 5.9 Liter D. In addition to the shifting issues, the check engine is on and OBD system gives code 7020.

In all my reading, that is the transmission speed sensor, locatedin the rear of the transmission drivers side. I am going to replace it next week when I get back in town...dealer part should be abour $50. 5 minute fix.

Even though you may not have the check engine lights, or OBD code yet, I would bet my hat it is your transmission speed sensor.

I have already changed my Rear Differential/ABS speed sensor about 5k miles ago because of a similiar problem, but with that check engine light and OBD code I was having ABS issues, the system was not workig...this time it is just shifting issues...so this time it is transmission speed sensor.

Tps is the likely failure for a irratic torque converter lockup.

I had the same problem. Found that it was the throttle position sensor. Got tip from another forum. Worked perfectly. Had this problem for over 2 years and no dealer could figure it out. A tip on the forum and 25 bucks later at Auto Zone, problem solved. You can do it yourself it's so easy.
