How To Center The Steering Wheel??

I have a 1999 Sahara and she runs straight and true. My only problem is that the steering wheel is not centered. Can I center the steering wheel by adjusting the Center Link (attached to the pitman arm) or must I remove the steering wheel with a puller and recenter? I would hate to have to send it in for an alignment. Thanks!

Cliff

Re: How To Center The Steering Wheel??

I don't know if yours is different, but on my 92 Wrangler, I have to rotate the center link to get the steering wheel centered. There is some movement in the steering wheel if you pull that. There is a notch cut for the horn that gives you some movement in the steering wheel. Just depends how far off it is.

Re: How To Center The Steering Wheel??

I estimate the steering wheel to be about 20-degrees to the left from center. So If I loosen the clamp on the Center Link and rotate it either out or in, this should help to center the steering wheel with no effect on wheel alignment???

Re: How To Center The Steering Wheel??

Should be ok, but watch for getting the turn signals messed up.

*edit*

What I mean is that if you turn the steering wheel shaft, you could get the turn signal release mechanism off by a little.

Point the weels straight and adjust the tie rod, don't mess with the steering weel. loosten the clamps, use penetrating oil and maybe a pipe wrench and spin the tie rod and watch the steering weel. Don't forget to unlock the steering weel.
