Emissions Control

Who knows about emissions control hardware ? Like technical information ? I want to know about what I think is called a smog pump. Anyway, its a belt driven air pump that (if I understand this right) pushes air back into the exhaust manifold to dilute exhaust gasses and make the cat's job a little easier. Is that right ? IF that's right, then it's like a double wammy to engine performance, right ? Pulling power from the belt and also forcing stuff back into the exhaust ? Does anyone know how much air it pushes back into the exhaust charge ? I know it's going to be dependant on engine RPM, but yeah. I could see a decent amount of performance increase at higher rpm if I pulled it off, right ? Would that interfere with the computer system's calculation of air and fuel mixtures and what not ? I'm not good with the specifics of fuel injected engines, so bear with me. Thanks in advance guys.

Re: Emissions Control

What the hell are you talkin about....there is nothing of the such on a cavalier.... the only thing that would throw a bad emissions problem is your 2 O2 sensor.... or if your cat is bad...frequent miss fires... or your running rich all the time which is usually caused by a bad O2 sensor. there is nothing that pushes anything back into the exhaust.... the converting just simply makes sure that the combustion goes to completion... there is no smog pump in my car nor cavaliers to my knowledge...

Re: Emissions Control

The EGR Valve? Exhaust Gas Recirculating Valves.

It allows gases back into the combustion chamber.

sorry guys, I must be a moron. I swear I've seen them on several cars, most with rwd(several newer caprices and an older Isuzu). I was working on one of my other cars (93 caprice) and it has one. One of the guys at my church owns a garage, so I asked him about it. He said that its called a smog pump, and told me what I told you, I guess I'm looking for a second opinion now. He said he had one on his similar year sunbird, so I assumed my cavi had one too. I took it apart, and all it was, was an airpump, and it looked like it ran back into the exhaust manifold (am I completely out of my mind ?) It was mounted lower on the accessories bracket and so when I couldn't see it on my cavi I just figured it was hiding somewhere. Help me out here guys. Am I THAT stupid ? Thanks in advance.

Re: Emissions Control

My 1989 does NOT have one. It did not come with one. I believe the last year for the smog pump was 1987. They make great superchargers for go carts :-)
