Engine replacement '96 SL2

I am trying to find a used engine for our '96 DOHC sl2.

What other years would be a straight swap??

What other years could I do a "small" modify and swap??

Thanks In Advance,
DNO.

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

any 96-early 99 SL2, SC2, and SW2 will be a direct swap, 93-95 will take a little bit of work

Thanks for the help Sierrap, I have an engine I am watching on E-Bay that is telling me that the 95-97's are the direct swap.

Another site poster told me that Saturn changed the exhaust manifold in '98 and that may be a problem.

Also, do you know why the '95 engine would not be a straight swap??

Can you interject??

Thanks again for the help,

Dean.

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

in 96 saturn switched to OBD2, changed a few things electrically, but mechanicily the engines are the same with the exception of the valve cover. for a 95 to work IIRC you need to swap the valve cover or spark plug wires, and leave one sensor disconnect, as it is no longer needed.

in 98 they did add a mini-catalyic converter into the exhaust manifold, it is used to lower emmissions when the engine is cold before the primary convertior is warmed up. your 96 manifold will bolt up to the 98 block, or you could use a 98 manifold, but i think you would need to change the down pipe

Re: Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

THanks again for the reply,
I want to keep this as kleen as possible with an "in-and-out" swap. Not switching over parts, so....I assume I am looking at either a '96 or '97 for the straight swap.....

Thanks,

DNO.

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

the exhaust manifold needs to be disconnected one way or the other, it really wouldn't take any extra work

Re: Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

Why would I need to remove the entire manifold, instead of just the exhaust doughnut??

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

thats what i mean, the manifold comes out with the engine, then undo 5 bolts, slap on a new gasket, and tighten 5 bolts

Re: Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

OK I'm all in......lol you make it sound so easy.

I'm sure there may be a quirk or 2 with the swap, but as long as it's do-able, I'm for it if I find a '98 engine. This is just for the '98 we are talking about right?? Not the '99+'s.

Thanks Again

DNO.

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

later 99s will not work, early 99 will, you can tell by the intake manifold, the early 99s are aluminum and have a side mounted throttle body(identical to yours), the late 99 have a plastic intake manifold and a top mounted throttle body

Nice info on the '99. I have a "boneyard" near here that has a '99. I will check it out today.

Thanks again for the help,

Sierrap:
Thanks again for the help as previous.
I have a '96 engine I am swapping for my bad '96.
I checked all the "stuff" and it all seems the same.
I have 2 different inputs as far as the swap itself.
One is telling me to remove the trans with the engine, and the other is saying to do just the engine.
Also, I got the engine from a yard in KY, and he is suggesting to leave the trans in.
Do you have any input here??

TIA

Dean.

Re: Engine replacement '96 SL2

if its a manual trans you must remove them together, autos i think can go ether way.
