1996 Poniac Grand Am water pump

Does anyone have any tips for replacing a water pump on a 1996 Poniac Grand Am... ...Im refusing to Pay dealer over $ 800 as the water pump is under warrenty from 2001 but since i dont have my original receipt the GM will not cover it...

So Im boycotting GM and will hopefully with help do this without them
any suggestions

What size engine do you have in the car? It would help to know to determine difficulty of the replacement. A V-6 water pump only costs about $30 from Advance auto parts and will be a lot easier to replace than a 4 cylinder. The pump for the 4cyl. is about $70 and is harder to change although not $800 worth. I would look for another shop to do the work, try Pep Boys, Firestone or another chain store for an estimate you can even call them on the phone and request a price since you know what needs done.

It Is a 4 cyl.. engine ... well how much more difficult is it???

To describe the whole procedur would take a lot of writing. Your best bet is to pick up a "Haynes" repair manual. I don't think the 2001 book is out yet for the Grand Am, but the 2000 one is. The Engines are identical, in fact the cars are pretty much also. The book will cover everything from a simple fix to a complete teardown of the car.

Like I said, even though you have a 2001 the book will be fine because both model years a practically identical and the engines are for sure. I paid $21 canadian for mine so in the states it'll probably run you about $15 and should be available at any major auto retailer. If you buy this particular book the info you need will be on page 3-8 and 3-9. This book will be your "Grand Am Bible" and it's worth every penny.

It is a 1996 grand Am ... March 2001 was when the water pump went in that now needs replacing

Will that book still apply??? or do you have other suggestion for manual

I'm an idiot, you have it written in your first post that it's a 96. Sorry. Honestly I've never owned a Grand Am prior to 2001 myself so I'm not overly familiar with the '96's engine. Your in luck though. Haynes manual part number 38025 covers your year.

The hardest part about changing this pump is getting to it. On the 4 cyl's the pumps are located on the back of the engine. Once you get to it you should be able to change it in an hour or two depending on your mechanical ability. Good Luck! PS. The repair manual will help you a lot and save you bunches of money in the long run.

Okay I Have changed plenty of waterpumps and there located usually on the left side of your engine block! You have to disassemble your timing belt,ac belt and if you have another belt.... the belts run over top of the water pump... If you need more details or anything let me know... I have a three 91-94 ford probes... and i use to own a 93 Grand Prix... so i do know what i am talkin about...
