My 89 CRX Si has been lowered about 2 inches. Was wearing out tires pretty bad so installed a camber kit. (It was a cheap kit I bought off eBay I think an OBX) Had the car aligned and now everything is great except.....
Occasionally I get a ticking noise coming from the front-left underside of the car. It only happens when the car is in gear and is more apparent when decelerating. So I figured it had something to do with the drive shaft. I took a look to see if I could find where it was coming from and it appears that the inboard u-joint housing is just knicking a bracket that sits right below it. It doesn't seem to affect the car in anyway, its just an annoying sound. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem?

clicking only while in gear sounds like driveshafts. those things go out so often that my local auto parts store carried both of them in stock, meaning so many people, in even this tiny little town, have bought that part from them they see fit to carry it all the time. after turning in the old ones for the core discount, i ended up only spending about $140. i had 222k miles on mine when i started noticing the symptom, but it took to 230k for them to start SHAKING BADLY. i had to replace them.
replacement was easy even for my first time. i had already spent more than $200 getting balance, rotation, alignment, and even new friggin tires trying to diagnose, finally, that it was the driveaxles that were causing the vibrations and odd grinding noises. an older family crx, years ago (like 84/85 hf) produced a clicking sound, but only while turning a certain direction. that was the driveaxle as well. having replaced that one is why my dad had the proper socket on hand. anyway, i have no experience with cambre kits, so i have no idea whether or not this could cause the clicking, but the fact that it only happens in gear sways me to the driveaxles. |

Re: Question for people w/camber kits
Hey skotman,
Thanks for the feedback but sounds like a different problem. I have zero vibration (after spending like amounts on tires, balancing, alignment, etc) and definitely no grinding. I can only describe it as a 'ticking' sound. And I have looked at the u-joint housing (right term?) where the driveshaft fits into the tranny and I can see some wear on the u-joint housing. It is definitely interfering with this little bracket that sits just below it. The reason it ticks is that the u-joint housing has about six facets around its circumference, three indentions, and three protusions. Its the protusions that are hitting the bracket because I can see wear on them. I'll try to get some pics this weekend. (But, thanks again for the feedback)

Take the bracket off. It couldnt be important, its only a bracket.

Re: Question for people w/camber kits
HA !!!
I'll try to get some pics this weekend, but here's a page from the manual. ![]() See the bracket under the CV Joint housing. They are actually making contact !!! Does that help?

Re: Question for people w/camber kits
Check your motor/tranny mounts, it sounds like your tranny is sitting way to low.

Re: Question for people w/camber kits
i'm not clear on exactly what a camber kit does. if it moved the position of the wheel, though, perhaps then the driveshaft's angle may have changed and that's why it's hitting whatever it's hitting (i'm unclear on what bracket you're talking about even with that illustration). on my car, all i see below the joint in my driveshaft is my exhaust and a little bracket for that, but that's part of the exhaust pipe itself.
