how to replace oil pump on 87 cutlass calais

someone please help i need to replace the oil pump on the calais but i don't know how. my grandfather said i would have to drop the tranny to get to the pump. Is this true? can i go about it another way? Please help i need this car like 2 weeks ago.

If you have the 2.3 Quad 4, I have some bad news for you. I have a 88 Calais with the 2.3 Quad 4 and I had to change out my oil pump. Problem is that you cannot get that pump (1st design) you have to upgrade to the 2nd design. That means that you need the pick up tube and oil pan that goes with it. Both are totally different from the 1st design. Good news is that you can probably get the pan and pick up tube from a bone yard for $60 (thats what I did) and I purchased a new pump from Advanced Auto for $100. The pump on the 2.3 Quad 4 is inside the oil pan.
