displacement

ok upon picking up my superstreet mag this month i see a whole section dedicated to the 240... my luck... and ne one who read my previous thread will remember i was trying to get an idea of wat i wanted to do with my 96 240. basically i need an engine swap for my 120k mile ka24. so as i read the magazine i found a few interesting things. the one that stuck out to me was the displacement kits to get the sr20 to 2.2 or 2.4
kinda steep prices but those are the prices listed in the magazine so i was wondering if ne one knew about that... btw i set my heart on the s14 sr20 and even tho i want a daily driver... if i could afford to increase the displacement that would b raw... one of the things that always comes up in a ka24deT vs sr20det convo is that the increased displacent helps loads and that all u got to do pretty much is slap a big turbo after u rebuild. the ka is a nissan truck engine from wat i read and produces nice power at low range, hence that throaty engine sound. wat would that sr20 sound like if it was an sr24det and wat kind of potential would it have?

Re: displacement

Its kind of a hypothetical question but it would probably sound like a KA. I bought that issue too. I forget exactly what the specs on the kit were but the KA gets its sound from the long stroke it has. If you did the same to the SR, then you would get a similar sound. For the price you would spend boring and stroking the SR, you could have a ten second or maybe even faster KA or RB. And the KA produces nice power up to around 55-6000 RPMs and is limited by the cams it comes with.

Re: displacement

it is... now thats a serious car. i havent heard of ne one who is looking for big power out of an sr20 to increase the displacement, assuming $$ is not an issue, is it a bad idea? and how much are we talking about when we say 2.0 to 2.4?

Rods, pistons and crank will be around 4000$ I guess, machining will cost a pretty penny, I'm thinking, not worth it, but if money isn't an issue, go ahead!

Re: displacement

Sleeving the block is pretty expensive. If you do this, make sure you get everything done. O-ring, check the rods and crank for balance(they should already be balanced), deck, check sketch pattern on the cylinder walls, blueprint, and so on. There was an entire section on machine shops in Dsport a little while ago.

Re: displacement

The KA is an internal combusion engine. It is torque biased, but so is a viper engine.

Re: displacement

Its the JDM crew's way of trying to make you feel stupid because you didn't spend $3000 on a JDM engine.

Re: displacement

2.0 to 2.4 seems quite hefty.. i've heard of a 0.25ish increase in displacement but never 0.4. would there actually be enough room for 0.4 increase in the sr block??

im pretty shure i read somewhere the ka was built with the idea of putting it in a truck... not a car. but wuteva. im not saying i want to do this im just saying i saw 3 stroker kits for it in the mag we were talking about rangin from 4k to 10k. and they were .2 and .4, the apexi .2 was 10k (lmao) and i was wondering if this was done at all and if so why no one talks about it. seems like if u got some cash to spend, increasing the displacement on the sr would give someone serious braggin right to begin with and never lose an sr vs ka convo on his block, oh ya and also make the sr a serious powerhouse. why cant i find a few g's lying around

i've only seen stroker kits to make the sr a 2.2L

also i think its kind of funny that in the US nissan used the KA in so many cars, if i'm not mistaken i believe it was put in the 240sx, altima, frontier, xterra

if you want bragging rights and have enough money to turn a SR20 to 2.4L why not go for something more extreme, like what one shop did and give a 240sx the 2jz [supra motor] and produce an extreme amount of power, i believe it was in the neighborhood of 1200+ rwhp

ya it would be more for the 1200whp but you get the picture

Re: displacement

the reason why you don't find too many people talking about it is because instead of spending $5000 on an sr20 and then minimum $4000 on a stroker kit, people will buy the rb25 for half of that total price.. so unless you feel like spending that extra money, do the rb or just boost your ka.. but then, it depends on what kind of power you want and what kind of driving you wanna do.. and as i see, you want something for everyday driving, so build for that.. which will most likely be a decision between ka-t or sr20

TeH Ghey that car was supposed to have a 7-800HP VQ in it but I guess they couldnt do it.

TOP SECRET > SIGNAL although I suppose Top Secret couldnt do it with a VQ35 Either... at least they kept the VQ.
