24 hr endurance on high mileage car, bad idea????

ok I am buying a 92 GSR tomorrow or the next day, then about a week later when my vacations over Im flying a buddy cross country to where Im at now, and we are gonna begin a 44hr-36min cross country marathon back to washington where I live. now he has to be back 2 days after he gets here so we have about 52 hours to get back, so technically we can do it nby switching off and sleeping whjen not driving, I have one bag and hell have about nothing so the back seats gonna fold down for a bed sorta deal back there. I was just wondering how bad it would be for an engine to be running for such a damn long time, especially with 170k on the clock. I am gonna set cruise at thew limit and I told him he has to also so no cops and so its not revving excessivly with that low GSR gearing.

I was also thinking though sicne it has a cooling system that once it gets to a certain temp it stays around that range of heat theres no problem cuz it gets that hot on EVERY drive now it will just stay there longer, and if that temps safe sometimes should always be I think.

so is it safe to give the car almost no breaks except for food and pit-stops or should I let him stay home, drive it about 12-13 hours, get a motel and then start again the next day and again and again til I get home giving it nice breaks to cool off completely before I start driving for another long distance.

also it is beter on an engine to be at varying RPM's over long periods of time right? or is that just for break in its best to vary them.

let him stay home and get a motel, u should take a 30 minute break every 4-6 hours to let the engine cool down since it has 170k miles on it already

If everything is in as good of condition as you had said it is... driving the car normally across the country shouldnt be extremely hard on it. You will give it breaks when you eat, rest, fill up... I think we all have tendencies to worry too much about our engines lol. I feel guilty after racing mine :-/ The fact is engines are designed to run... and freeway driving is the easiest thing on an engine aside from it not running at all. Just make sure your not overheating at all, and make sure your fluid levels are kept proper and everything should be fine. Fluids levels are directly proportional to the life of the car, keep that in mind.

Re: 24 hr endurance on high mileage car, bad idea????

I am gonna thrw in some of that 8 dollar a quart super coolant shit. when I drove my B18 civic through red bluff in about 100+ I had the windows down, heater CRANKED @ 65 and was running hot but steady then pulled off the freeway and got some super coolant and threw a bottle in, I was doing 95 with no heater and was running cooler than I ever had.

I still had that tiny single core radiator though, now I got the dual core prelude SI radiator in there and I could probably sit at redine all day in 125 degree weather and run hella cool.

Re: 24 hr endurance on high mileage car, bad idea????

When my cousin had my accord, before I owned it, he and a friend drove from NY to Florida...or Texas...I forget which...regardless it was a really long drive...and they did the return trip the next week.
It was a 90 accord with 140,000 and they were probably speeding the whole way. It ran fine, and the engine still does now. Just make sure you aren't burning oil...and if you are, pull over more often and make sure to keep the oil levels where they should be.
