Re: noisy fuel pump?

It's a common problem on older Suburbans and also on your 2000. When the pump makes as much noise as you described, it can fail at anytime without warning. And the pump sits on top of your tank, so a garage will have to drop the tank to replace it. The average price for pump and labor is $600. I know my 99 Sub died one morning last winter in the driveway and it cost me $700. I my model the fuel pump and sending unit is together. But I'm not sure if it's the case with your 2000 Sub. Did you check the fuel filter? If the filter is very dirty you will have a fuel restriction and the pump gets noisy. That' also wears out the pump prematurely. Good luck and let me know.

Re: noisy fuel pump?

You may want to read my thread; "Suburban Fuel Pump" last edited on 10-21-04. It may shed some lite on your concern. Save some money and try a new Fuel Filter first, it's located in the frame rail under the drivers seat. If you notice more power, then your filter was clogged. You may also notice a change in the pump noise after the new filter is installed! Because the pump doesn't have to work so hard, but it's lifespan was probably shortend.

Re: noisy fuel pump?

You Know these pumps make a humming/winning at ALL times they pump 60-65 psi. DONT worry about the noise, you CAN NOT do nothing about it. IT DOES NOT MEAN ITS GOING BAD.( the only way to see if its bad is to pressure test it ) YOU NEED to worry about it when you DONT hear the damn noise..

just for future reference stubbornmike is wrong a PROPERLY working fuel pump does not make any noticeable noise i also had this problem when i bought my suburban with 50000 miles and after about 1500 spent trying to fix it in various shops i just replaced the fuel pump myself for 150 off ebay and it fixed all my problems and the noise is completely gone now the only noise is the a/c compressor but you can only hear that with the hood opened.

so if your pump whines replace it before you cause damage to your engine from insufficient fuel it will RUN LEAN with a bad pump and it can fail at any time.
