Problems, Problems, Problems......

Car: 1995 Eagle Talon Tsi

problem #1
As i start my car the RPMs shoot up tp 2000 then slowly fall to 1500, then say there and drop alittle more to 1300, then bounces around betwween 1000 and 1300. If i rev it up and then let the rpms drop it bottoms out at about 500-700 and then stabilizes at 1000, just wondering if this was normal?

BTW:i also hear alittle of, valve taping or clicking... idk if that could be it either....

Problem #2
when the car starts and the clutch is all the way in and in nutral, it makes a high pitch squelling at cirtin RPMs, but if i just push on the clutch pedal and move the pedal about an inch it goes away. it also goes away after it runnig for about 5min or untill it gets warmed up..please help!!!

-Jake

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

problem 1: thats commonly known as idle surge. search the board and youll find plenty of thuings to check. i would start by cleaning the throttle body.
problem 2: the squeling is probably a loose belt.

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

If moving the clutch affects the noise I would suspect TOB, though I dont know if I've ever heard one squeal. Usually its a grinding or rumbling noise. But if its metal on metal its possible.

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

sometimes pushing the clutch can change to amount of load on the engine enough that the belt will grab. whenever the engine squels i always check the belts first since they are the most common thing to make squeling noise.

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

fixed both problems, ur right it was the belt....
took off the TB and cleaned all the dirt off the butterfly, i think the dirt was sealing off the airflow messing with the idle ,i also recalibrated the TB and stuck it back on , adjusted the BISS to 750 RPM , no surge ,runs great!

....End of thread....

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

Hey Jake how did you successfully set the idle on the 2g dsm....ive tried it before but i just could not get it. I set the damn thing it stays for like 30 seconds and then it goes back down to 500 rpm.

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

Its one of those things where you just have to pop the hood and look at it. Ok, you might need a flash light too Assuming turbo motor:

PS pump - 4 bolts, 2 on back, 2 on front, loosen and pry the pump away from the block to tighten the belt.

Alternator - has a threaded rod/bolt style tensioner. Loosen the 12mm head bolt that holds the alternator to the slotted bracket. Tighten the bolt to pull the alternator away from the motor. Then tighten that 12mm bolt again to lock it in place. Ratcheting box end wrenches are priceless for this.

AC compressor - Another bolt style tensioner, pain to get to, I found it easier to stand with my back to the car and do it all behind me by feel.

REmember, overtightening belts will cause premature failure of the accessory belts bearing/bushings and can stress the main crank bearings.

Re: Problems, Problems, Problems......

a good rule of thumb is after you tighten them give the belts a twist...if you can twist them more than a 1/4 turn than their too loose, if you can't turn them more than a 1/16 of a turn their to tight..try to keep it between a 1/8 twist.
