92 3.1 to 350 conversion

I have a 92 RS with a 60 degree 3.1. I rebuilt this motor and have had problems with it ever since. It just pinged at 230 degrees and probably warped or cracked a head. Anyways I was thinking about converting to a 350 carburated motor and geting rid of all of the electronics. Has anyone done this before? Will a 350 fit in the stock locations?

Re: 92 3.1 to 350 conversion

ok, well first off, there is a search option at the top of the forum, that you can use to find threads on this subject, believe me when i tell you that there are lots of them.....

those should help a bit.

the general concensus that if you want to swap to a 350, your best bet is to find a doner car at the junkyard. and get all the parts you need off of that. If you are looking to just go carbed, you dont have to fool with all the electronics, although you might have a check engine light on all the time cuz the computer wont have input from the sensors. Also, this will only work in an area that dosnt have emissions testing. With that in mind, all you will need to do is get the 350 built, get the V8 motor mounts, get a tranny that will back it up, if you are running the T5 manual it wont survive behind a 350, youll need to upgrade to a T56 or a 700R4, or a richmond 5 speed. The rear end will hold to a mild 350, but if you pass 400hp youll have to rebuild it with some strentgh, stud girdles, and all that fun stuff. i suggest doing alot of research before undertaking that project. and also having someone by your side that knows what they are doing. for the engine youll also have to get the cooling equipment, radiator hoses, radiator, youll also want the air intake off of a TBI equipped RS so that the carb isnt just sucking in hot engine compartment air. other than that, run fuel and 12 volts to it, and run with it. but i think that dumbing down the car is never a good idea, especially if you live in an area with emissions testing, because you will NEVER pass that way.
