A Diesel Type-R Anyone?

The title might sound strange but it could happen. Honda already showed us there sporting diesel ambitions when they released the Type-S CDTi at the Paris motorshow, with 17" alloys, unique blue paint and Type-R bodykit it certainly looked the part sadly the engine under the bonnet was the weedy 100bhp 1.7litre common-rail diesel used by the standard car. Although Honda is seriously looking into creating a hot-hatch diesel. The Honda Accords 2.2litre i-CDTi diesel engine would fit nicely under the Civic's bonnet and would offer a more potent 138bhp with max torque of 340nm. This car may of may not appear in late 2006, as it will be released quite late on in the Civic's life. If it does a Type-R diesel will be certainly interesting.

If so, then there could be some good competition with VW golf and passat. Especially since they are becoming very popular tunner cars also.

Yup, Honda re-entered the diesel market two years ago. Their first atempt in the mid-ninties was very poor as they made use of ancient old Rover units dating back to the fifities. Today they offer the best diesels around(in Europe) the Honda Accord i-CDTi in particular has moved the diesel game on, in many ways. The Accord's engine is also avaliable in the FR-V and CR-V. This engine in the Civic would be a sure fire hit and certainly could give VWs diesels a run for their money.

Re: A Diesel Type-R Anyone?

Ok, diesel engines are great, you can get mass ammounts of power out of tehm, and they get better gas mileage. The army currently has a vehicle with a 1.2 liter diesel engine, in line 6, turbo, putting out over 300 hp, bad ass, and tehy are fun to drive. As far as civic competition, teh civic has a long way to go before it really competes with anything considered fast. The VW golf is a slow POS, except the vr4 or whatever the hell it is, and the passat is more luxury than sport. want speed, go nissan.

I would be interested in hearing more about this engine.

The Civic Type-R diesel would'nt be slow by any means, it would offer around 130mph top speed and 0-60 time of about 8.0seconds, plus the fact it meets Euro IV emission legislation its a great company car. Even GM are getting in on the act, the new Opel/Vauxhall Astra will be avaliable with a 1.9litre Multijet diesel from Fiat which offers 150bhp and is good for 140mph and reachs 60 in about 7.5seconds.

There is a whole market of fast diesels opening up in Europe.

The engine is the 3126. It is a catipillar (3) 1.2 liter engine (12) in-line 6 (6). It has a huge turbo on it, it powers the fastest accelerating vehicle in the united stated army, which weighs weighs 5 tons.

I'm not sure why Honda is going deisel? customers save money on gas?? I think they should keep with the Hybrids. They have a lot of potential in the future.

That is not at all impressive. The RSX has a top speed of roughly 145. The WRX gets to 60 in 4.7 seconds. 8 seconds to 60 is kinda slow. New vipers can get 0 to 60 back to 0 in 15 seconds.

The 3126 engine does sound truly impressive, but is it common-rail and what are its C02 emissions? and what is the refinement like?

You cant expect to compare a commercial diesel engine to the latest technology used for passenger cars. Diesel's have came a long way from say 10years ago when they were heavy, smelly and slow. You also can't expect to compare a Honda Civic to a Dodge Viper, its a supercar for god sake, the Civic is small family hatch. Yes, 7.5seconds and 8.0seconds is impressive for a small diesel engined car. The new BMW 535d offers 275hp and 0-60 6.5seconds, so there!!

Re: A Diesel Type-R Anyone?

ooooooooo aaaaaaahhhhh.

Sorry. ANyway, teh 3126 engine had bad enough emissions that it had to be redesigned. It is works great now though. According to Caterpillar you can get 300-500 hp out of them, but they are big, and made for trucks.

Re: A Diesel Type-R Anyone?

whyh does it hyave to be bigger. THe new 4 cylinders hyave as much power as tehy 8's, and six cylinders hyave the power of an 8 but rev like a 4. Americas fascination with size pisses me off a little. Besides, theyh already hyave factoryh turbo cars, withy oil squirters and all kinds of other nice stuff.

Re: A Diesel Type-R Anyone?

when i said "bigger and better" it was just an acronym. i didn't mean litteraly a bigger engine. honda is the best at getting power out of 4 and 6 cylinders. (look at the s2000 and ITR) i meant, why waste time with diesel cars when they could doing new things with the hybrids, fuel cell cars, or even working on a new design with a turbo (like GScivic7 mentioned) what honda has a stock turbo? enlighten me.
