Is xterra best dollar for dollar suv around?

Hey everyone, I am new to this site, but it looks to be a great informational place to be. Anyway, I am researching about getting an offroad capable suv or truck. This will be my first time owning one. It will be used for daily driving, occasional towing (jet ski's) and occasional offroading ( minor stuff, small mud pits, small rocks, and easy trails). I have been looking at Xterras, Rubicons, and a few trucks. I definitly want a V6, it doent have to be SC, but has to be 4x4. In your expert opinions, is this a good starting vechicle. I need to buy a 2000-2003 model of whatever. I know I can get the 3 inch lift, and bigger tires, and i know the power specs, but I would like some feedback from current owners. If you were to do it over again, would you go with an Xterra, or something else?

Thank you for all your help. My current setup is 67 Camaro with 383 turbo, and I just want to get my feet wet in the offroading scene.

If I was buying new, yes I would buy an Xterra again. If old, maybe a FJ and build it up. Yes it's a good vehicle for getting your feet wet and performs very well right out of the box. Gas mileage is low and power is so-so, but it sounds like you know that already. I believe there are a few threads in the "General" section regarding peoples opinions about their trucks.

BTW, why not just lift the Camaro and put 35's on it. It wouldn't be the last muscle car I've seen in the woods with a set of MT's.

I own a 2001 4x4 Xterra, I love it. For my next SUV I will be getting a 2005 Xterra (Off Road Package), no question about that!

It really looks like the next Xterra is really going to be a great vehicle. All those new features, like better more powerful engine, new frame and suspension and locking rear differential.
