Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

Hey Im working on putting a turbo on my 1gNT and I've noticed on my friend turbo 1g I don't think he has coolant lines running to his 14b! it looks like they just have plugs on it! could I just run the oil lines, i only plan on running 5 maybe 6 pounds of boost. or if I do have to run the coolant lines where do they plug in?

Re: Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

With conventional bushing turbos like that you can get away with no coolant lines. My T67 isnt running any, and doesnt even have any ports for it ("dry center"). BB turbos dont get enough oil flow to cool the turbo though, so they have to use coolant. I would try the 14b without coolant lines and see if it works well enough. If it eats shit, they're cheap enough

Re: Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

Water temp is regulated. It should always be the same temperature.

nice ya i really dont wanna run lines and that does make sense it would lower you water temp because then the rad doesnt have to work to keep the turbo cool aswell. I'm just going to throw some plug on it. Does anyone knoe if the bottom oil line bolts into the oil pan or does it bolt onto the block below the exhaust manifold?

Cool Re: Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

The oil drain bolts from the bottom of the turbo into the oil pan, where the port/flange is for it. This thread also makes me feel reasured since my recent install of an evo 16g that I had to bend/kink the coolant lines to fit.

thanks, this is kind of off the origional topic but does anyone know if the stock 14b wastegate can support only running around 5psi of boost without modification? and if not what do you have to do to it?

Re: Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

The actuator is 9-10 psi, can't go below that. Might have to try getto rigging some other actuator on there, or see if mitsu offers a smaller one. Contact SBR (www.slowboyracing.com), I've gotten a few different actuators from them, and they do turbo NTs, hondas, etc, so they must have smaller actuators.

Thanks but i got another question for ya guys! do you think if I were to run 5psi on my N/T 4g63 do you think the air will heat up that much that'll i'll actually have to run an intercooler? like i want to play it safe! also will the n/t injectors and pump hold up for only 5 psi?

Not sure about the injectors and pump--check the stickied thread about turboing N/T DSMs. As for the intercooler--throw on a sidemount. Cooler air = better, and you can pick up a stock DSM sidemount for like $30, if not less, at a junkyard, and do PVC piping if you're into cheap stuff.

Oh, and btw Kevin, one of the mods on DSMtuners tried to run his T25 without coolant lines and grenaded the turbo in a couple of weeks.

Re: Do I need Turbo Coolant Lines?

Thats odd. I wonder if its becaseu the extremely small exhuast housing makes the turbo retain too much heat. That and it spins at like 160k rpm because its so small.

That was my guess--makes me scared to put on my s16g without coolant lines though, so I will be doing my best to hook 'em up

Can you really find em that cheap? if so thats sweet! but bout those injectors and pump i still dunno what i should do! i could just rip some off an old 5 speed turbo but as for the pump thier damned expensive for something so small! damn mitsubishi parts!!!
