97 gcaravan torque converter locked up

My Caravan converter is occasionally locked up in the mornings after a cool night. It started this last winter and total quit in the warm summer months, but has just started again. The engine starts fine, when the trans is shifted, the engine dies as the vehicle jumps hard. Is there a control valve that could be hanging up in the cold, or is the converter controled by computer? There are no fault codes. After I get the vehicle moving the problem usually goes away before I make the first stop. When it is in this mode the trans does shift thru the gears, but if you come to a stop the engine is forced to stop. Any Ideas?

The TCC if there is one on this model should not engage until around 50MPH. Sounds like the torque converter is going...gone. It is rare for one of these vehicles not to have a transmission problem.
Either get rid of it now or get ready for a rebuild for around $2000.
PS- changing the fluid & filter is a waste of time and will (from my own experience) accelerate the impending failure.
