Angry Broken Hood latch

I have a '92 k1500. I went to check my oil. Pulled the hood latch, and heard a vey loud snap. How does one get the hood open when the cable has broken inside the hood?? I checked underneath the dash and the cable is still ok. Please any ideas?? Thanks

Re: Broken Hood latch

have someone push down on the hood while you pull the lever. if you get no respnse at that time you may have to remove the grill and pry the lever over with a screwdriver. the cable may look good but if it broke where it activates the hood release it will need to be replaced. cables stretch and quit working on chevies. toivo

Re: Broken Hood latch

If it's anything like my 1997 you have a real problem. It doesn't matter whether the cable is broken or that it detached from the release mechanism. There's only one way I could get to it. This was to drill a 3/4 inch hole in the hood above the latch and reach in with a tack-lifting tool to release the hood. My problem was the cable was fine but had detached from the release mechanism. I drilled the hole about 4 inches back from the very front of the hood and about 1-1/2 inches from the center towards the driver side. The fix was to drill a hole into the release lever and use a metal screw to reattach to clip to the release lever. If the cable's broken you have more than this to do. THIS WAS A SURE-FIRE DESIGN FUBAR. Whoever would attach the end of a cable to a spring clip! Only modern automakers could be this ignorant!

The OEM service manual says if cable breaks, use a rod to press the primary latch tab on left side of lock assembly. How do they expect u to do that when you can't get at the primary latch tab? 10 pages on taking off a wheelhouse panel. 1 sentence on repairing a broken cable.Over 3000 pages and thats all you get on hood latch cable replacement.

Re: Broken Hood latch

Thanks. I'll try the grill method, and if not, bye bye wheelhouse.
