surgery

I've had scoliosis since I was 6, and now that I'm 14 its getting worse. I'm either going to have to wear a brace or get major surgery on my back and have bars put in. I wouldn't be able to go to school or see my friends for a month and I wouldn't be able to play sports for 8 months, and there is so much I want to do since I just got into highschool and I would be miserable with pain and doing nothing. I am going to know what will happen on Tuesday. I am so scared. I've never had surgery. I can stop thinking about it and I couldn't even get happy about the Sox winning the world series. I am just so scared.

Just take it as it comes. Yes having surgery sucks I have had more then you can imagine. When I went to the Dr. I needed another medical history paper cause I ran out of space on the first one. But thats the price I need to pay for doing what I love.People say I should quit I just look at them like they are . Good luck.

Re: surgery

I have scoliosis too. Mine according to the Dr. isn't that serious yet but could get really bad. I've had surgery once before...my hips dislocated at the growth plates when I was 11. No one knew what was going on for like a month so I have to walk around on fucked up hips and I finally went in to see a pediatric orthapedist and he flipped out about me being able to walk and I had surgery the next day. They put pins into my hips and when I woke up the only pain I had was from the incisions...just lying down I could already tell my hips felt better. There's nothing to worry about with surgery, I mean sure something could go wrong and I will hurt a little but they do it for a reason. It will help. Good luck with everything.

Re: surgery

I have scoliosis as well.. My dad had it too though, so my mom was smart enough to get me into a chiropractor when I was just a baby, and ever since I've gone every few months, so it's not bad at all..

It'll be scary going into surgery for it, but it'll work out in the end for the best.. Don't think about howyou can't play sports for 8 months, think about how much better you'll be at sports after that 8 months .

One thing to note about surgery. Although it sucks, usually the longer you wait the worse off you are.

Re: surgery

Just look at people in wheelchairs, that should be enough inspiration to work up the courage to get the surgery.

Especially if you love playing sports

Re: surgery

Buck up Broseph! You are only concentrating on the bad things. What about hot young nurses, tons of attention, great pain killers, a little relaxation, some Jell-o and maybe a bit of T.V.

Oh...and your spine will be fixed, too....

Think Curt Schilling!

Re: surgery

Sounds to me like a brace for awhile is better than having surgery. If it'll take care of things, hey you're out a couple months but then will be good to go!

Re: Re: surgery

Right now, your at the age where you need to think long term. your body, as of now, is pretty much in the best shape of its life, health wise. your ability now, to cope and heal from the surgery will never be the same as it is now, as you get older. deal with the situation now, while its presented to you, will allow you greater freedom and more enjoyment out of your life on a later date, as you are watching your kids play in the yard, graduate, get married and so on.

get the drift?

Re: surgery

the longer you stay healthy the hapier you will be. i know i do not look forward to the day i cannot get out of bed easily, or cannot piss without help. if i knew that a little sacraficed time now would help me later on, i would gladly do it. thats why most people work out.

Re: surgery

About 2 years ago I had an abcess roughly the size of the state of texas. I since then have had 6 surgeries and it is finally getting to where i should be healed up soon. It sucks that you have to have surgery but sometimes its for the best. The best way I have come to deal with being out of commission for a while is pain killers and booze lol. After a few days you wake up and forget that you have been basically in bed for a week so the time passes quickly. But honestly its better to get it done now and get on with your life, you will be happy when its all over. I put off some of my surgeries for about a year and I wish i had gone ahead and had them, then i wouldnt be here right now sitting on a pillow lol.

Re: surgery

At age 55 I had my first surgery. A back fusion. At 55 it takes longer to heal but after the first week I started to feel better. It took me three years before I decided to have it done, never having surgery I really didn't know what to expect. I went in to surgery at 1300hrs on a Monday it was a 6.1/2hrs operation, and the next day at 1800hrs I was home. The first night home wasn't the best but Wen. afternoon I went out for coffee.
Good luck with what ever you decide. See more then one Doctor, I seen 4 before I found the right one.

Re: surgery

I've had more surgeries than you can imagine and I agree with everyone here. The longer you wait, the worse it is. Giving up 8 months of sports is better than giving up the rest of your life. If you're only a freshman in hs, you have 3 more years to kick ass at whatever sport(s) you play. Get it done now, that way, you wont have to give it up later. just my
