Question 301 HEI in a 455?

Can I use a HEI dist. from a 301 (about 1980) in my 1973 Pontiac 455.

Best regards from North Norway

Re: 301 HEI in a 455?

The shaft may be too short for the big block. Also the distributer curve may not be adequate for the big block either. Your best bet would be to find one from a 455 to insure that everything fits and works correctly. Regards from Pennsylvania, USA!

Re: 301 HEI in a 455?

The answer provided is incorrect. The distributor housings and shafts are the same. The deck height of the 301 is much lower than the others, but the distributor mounting is the same.
What you need to look for, is the vacuum advance. If the distributor has no vacuum can on it, it's for an '81, which was the first (and ONLY Pontiac V8) year GM cars used a computer to set the timing. If it has the vacuum advance, you just need to install lighter springs on the advance weights, to quicken up the timing curve.
