engine swap

i'm kind of an idiot when it comes to cars....all i know how to do is drive em, change a tire, the oil,....and all that other fun stuff. i recently got a 95 civic dx hatchback automatic. two things which i really want to do are change the engine and transmission. i read the read me post and kind of got a better feel of what i would be getting into. my first question is, if money were no object, what would be the best engine and most decent manual transmissions that i would be able to swap with. second question, go with cheapo coilovers or something nicer like tein? any hints would be much appreciated...thanks.

Re: engine swap

do not go cheap on suspension, you'll only regret it more later. As to whether what engine and tranny are best, what type of plans do you have for your car. Also, a realistic budget would help us help you.

money

yea....most of my friends have said to go with the expensive coilovers. as for the engine and tranny, well. i would mainly like to know what is the strongest honda engine which i would be able to replace my current one with.....as for the tranny, well one that matches the engine i get. for and engine i'd be willing to spend up to 3500....and for the tranny around like 1500. i'm more so looking for something that would last me a long time......i'm a casual driver who sometimes feels the need to punish the gas pedal, and when the other racers pull up next to me and start reving their engines, i'd like to be able to give em some competition.

Re: engine swap

Sounds like you want a B18C. I'd opt for the B18C1, GSR motor, rather than the B18C5, Type R motor, with the money left over you can have someone else install it. Or if you do it yourself, you can do some mods to it. Go for the GSR tranny too. It has close ratios, but not to the point where it'll end up being a gas hog sitting at high rpms constantly. Or, you could go with a Type R tranny and stick an LS 5th gear in there. That way you would have good acceleration through the first few gears and when you are just cruising you won't be guzzling the gas.

hey man thanks a lot for the info....i actually wanted the b18c the most but i had some questions about it. i read that sohc engines would not be able to be swapped with dohc engines. i really dont know what my car has except for the fact that it is stock...i'm pretty sure that it is an sohc.....isnt the b18c a dohc engine? i would definately need someone else to install it for me......would my regular mechanic do or should i consider something else? i live in honolulu....so if you know anyone good here let me know. once again thanks a lot for your info.

Re: engine swap

adjustable coils are not really needed... there are some good non adjustable springs out there too. i have sportlines on my car and like them.

the key is to not buy cheap crap. that applies to both adjustable coils and non adjustable springs
