1998 Engine Squealing

When first starting (like in the morning) the engine makes a squealing noise kind of like a fan belt that increases as rpm's increase and seems to go away (but not completely) after engine warms up. The location of the noise is middle back part of the engine, nowhere near the fan belt and/or pulleys. I sprayed fan belt with fan belt dressing but the squealing is still there. This just started about 2 weeks ago. Car has about 102k miles. Checked oil and it is fine. Oil is changed quite regularly (every 1.5 months) since the car travels at least a 100+ miles per day. No "Service Engine Soon" idiot light is coming on and the car idles and runs fine. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I have a 97 G that has been doing something like a squeal for several years, but not all the time. I isolated the whine to what I am calling an air pump. It is located on the air intake housing, near where the 3 inch hose connects. The other end of the hose connects to the air filter housing.

I isolated the noise to this device by removing the electrical connector and the squealing stopped. When the connector is removed there is a noticable degradation in idle smoothness. Pop it back on and the car idles smoothly.

really? because I have a 96 GL and mine sounds just like its coming from the altenator, so i replaced the serpetine belt after testing the altenator, (it runs at full volts) and it still does it. After putting belt dressing on it goes away, but a few days later it comes back again. I'll try what you did and see if thats the case, otherwise Im lost.

Re: 1998 Engine Squealing

If belt dressing makes it go away for a while, then it is not a mechanical problem. I came across the same problem on my 01'. I had never heard a belt sound this way before, It sounded like a pully going bad. Very loud. After replacing the idler pully, it stopped for a while, then came back. Turns out the belt was dirty from the belt dressing i was using, and it was creating a film on the idler and tensioner pully. Long story short, clean your idler and tensioner pully, the belt itself and then it should be fine. If not spray it with silicon lube for 30 sec and let sit over night. This softens the belt allowing it to grip better, belt dressing makes the belt hard. Hope that helps.
